Have a late 60's Buick v-6 I pulled from a jeepster and I have a sm 420 trans in my 57 cj 5. What bellhousing do I need and how much length does the bellhousing have? I pulled a tired 198 buick v-6 from the jeep so I know the bellhousings are different. I see where some of the bellhousings have to be turned out in the big hole to fit the 420 transmission in. Does all of the bellhousing have to be turned or is there one out there that will bolt right up? Thanks for any info!! fdpwr2a

The Muncie SM-420 will bolt to normal GM bellhousings. You. At. Red to drill out the bottom two holes a d run the. Olga from the inside of the bellhousing into the transmission. There is a thread currently discussing this. The SM-465 is the one That needs the indexing hole machined.

I understand that the bellhousing pattern is BOP. So what vehicles would have this? The cars with auto transmissions does not have a removable bellhousing from the auto trans does it? Thanks fdpwr2a

Dang I phone spell check. Anyway, BOP stands for Buick, Olds, Pontiac. Any of those vehicles with a manual transmission.

Just FYI, a Pontiac wouldn't work, the starter is on the wrong side. Not sure about an Olds.
Probably an original Jeep bellhousing 66-70 would be the easiest to find.

Try car-part.com - just pick a typical application, and their application should cross it to other models.

Good point about the starter. Many Pontiac Bellhousings did have starter pockets on both sides though.

Might put an ad in the Classifieds. Someone on here may have one.
