Original Color for 1960 CJ5 Windshield - All Black?

Hey folks.

So I have repaired the windshield, and I am ready to paint. I have tried to research this, and I just want to make sure before I paint that I get this right.

The paint I took off was black from the windshield, inside and out. But I have also seen windshields colored the same as the rest of the body.

An older thread on this forum suggested black. I just want to verify that is true. Want to be accurate in the restoration.

So which is it?





These pictures seem to suggest different variations. The shop manual looks like black.

Any info will be appreciated!

Pete was black. Every untouched 5 I've seen was black.

My cj windshield appeared to have never been sanded down. When I sanded it, it was black.

I've always thought they were all black up till 75, (except for the "super jeep")but I am not so sure- might want to keep digging on google images. The willys/kaiser advertising posters do show some with matching paint, but those were somehow special maybe?

Actually it was a mid-74 model year switch. Based on researching build dates and windshield colors I've narrowed it down to around January, 1974 when they switched. Mine is a June, 74 build that was factory body color.

My shop manual has the windshield in black. Most original images I have seen have black windshields.

Given that when I sanded it down and found black tells me that was the original color.

If you are going for 100% authentic, it should be semi-gloss black. I did mine in gloss but thinking about redoing it this winter to make it right.

Thanks! Will do, I am going to get the paint today. Primed it yesterday, so black goes on this week. semi-glossy it is.

Thanks from me, too! I wasn't up tp thinking about the windshield frame colour yet- still deciding body colour - but I'll file that away.

Semi gloss black. Not the prettiest windshield, but it will do.
