I've been serching for a couple hours now and it is totally obvious that the guys here know alot more about buick v6s then even the buick guys do.
The numbers on the back of the block are 1249432 (behind intake) .
I looked here but all the threads are dead ends.

I show that as a 75-76 231 V6 so it 'should' be an Odd Fire 231.

That makes a little more sense then. It has a point dist. The PO told me it was a79 but that would have been HEI if i'm thinking right.

I think the 75-76 OF 231 should be HEI from factory. Not positive. If it were a '79 it would be an even-fire, I think.

Given those years and the fact that the link above states that it is odd fire and no HEI. Those changes started later then that. In like 77 if I read it right. At any rate it will be HEI when I'm done.

As I stated in another post about these engines. '75-'77 231's were odd fire. Mid '77- up are evenfire. '77 was a transition year. All car 231's were HEI. A 225 points distributor could be used in an oddfire 231. There were marine versions of the Buick V-6, both 225's and 231's.
Points distributors were used in the 225 versions and I suspect but don't know that points were used in the 231 versions.

I as well have seen the early 231s with both points and HEI in the OF motors. Why, I don't know.
