What kind of tires are you running?

I just got my m151 mutt wheels in they are 4.5x16 what kind of radial tires could I run?

 

Is this for the A1 in the picture? If so, you may have clearance problems no matter how skinny the tire you run. Do you have stock axles in it or some later wide tracks? Personally, I don't think the M151 wheel is a good choice for an ECJ. I have 2 or 3 sets of 16" wheels but elected to go with Eaton 15x8 with 33 10.5 15 on my A1. This is a great combo in my opinion with 3 3/4" backspacing. I have a Black Diamond 3" lift on mine, but 31 10.5 or 30 9.5 would work on a non-lifted jeep.

 

I'm just looking for a tire that has street tread or a A/T tire

 

Depends on what you want to do and where you want to go. We're easy cruisers for the most part, so the smaller sizes are fine for us:

'53 A1 w/ stock springs, no lift: Wild Country Radial TXR 225x75x16 on stock wheels.

'63 CJ5 w/ stock springs, no lift: Wild Country Radial RVT 235x75x15 on stock wheels.

No clearance problems and they do all that we need them to.

 

I run 31x10.50 BFG AT's. They are not aggressive, but a good all around tire. Good in snow, and good enough off road, not hardcore. For a true hardcore tire, I prefer Super Swamper TSL bias plies.

 

I'm looking for a tire that is closer like this I'm going to drive it on the road more than anything.

 

235x75x15s have been great for me, these things aren't that great on the street to begin with. Although, I've had not complaints with the tires in my sig, in that size.

 

The 151 wheels are Inset too far for an early CJ IMHO. If you are stuck on running them get the absolute narrowest tire you can find if you want to have any turning radius at all as the tires will hit the springs and frame.

I know Interco makes a good tire for jeeps...they are called Boggers I beleive and come in the perfect size of 44x18.50R16.

You could put a set of spacers behind the 151 wheels to get around the backspacing issue, but I would be looking for a set of stock 15" wheels and, as with a lot of others, 235/75/15's, probably BFG AT's. Decent manners on and off road, unless perhaps, you are into rocks.

 

I just picked up some Dunlap 215/70r15s for my 62 thy are a .5" taller than stock but smaller then the 235/75r15s but I think thy look good and don't rub the springs on turns

 

what is the backspacing on the 151 mutt rims ?

 

Well I sorta gave up on the mutt wheels. I found these on morris4x4.com they are Crager 342 series that are 16x7 with a 4inch back spacing. I just haven't been able to find left and right hand threaded acorn lug nuts?

 

Gorilla Automotive 73187L - Gorilla Lug Nuts . This is where I got mine! first is LH threads and the second is RH.Gorilla Automotive 71187 - Gorilla Lug Nuts. I had to call them to place an order for the 2 RH and 2 LH locking lugs. I have two seperate Wheel lock keys but not a big deal. Give them a call and they can help you out.

I bought the same wheels but with the Simulock bead lock ring. They look really nice with the 31x10.5-15 BFG mud Terrain tires. Drove it only a short time on a dirt road so I can't yet tell you how they are on the pavement.

 

How good are Interco TSL 29x8.50-15LT on the street and on the trail? Because I'm thinking about going down to a 15x7inch tire like the Cragers like I listed above?

TSL's are lousy on the street and great on the trail. I had 33x15.5x15 TSL SX's on my '98 TJ. They were amazing offroad but were ridiculously loud on road and wore out after 15,000 miles. They also got flat spots and balanced horribly.
