Hi. I have a '73 CJ-5 with no roll bar. I want to add one, and found one from a '85 CJ-7. The 85 roll bar mounts near the floor on the fenders, at least my '81 CJ-5 did as I remember it. It's a good 5 hour drive to view this roll bar, so I want to make sure I'm not wasting my time. Would it be possible to mount this roll bar from the 85 CJ-7 into a '73 CJ-5?

Thanks. My 1981 AMC Jeep CJ-5/CJ-7 brochure has them both listed at 59.9" wide. Did they widen the CJ-7 after 1981? How can it be different at the windshield?

Gonna be longer, but not wider. I think you'll have fitment issues in the front compartment and in the rear area also.

I would pass. The floors and wheelhouses changed in 1976, and it's unlikely that the later bar will fit without changes. Any rollbar made for a '55 through '75 CJ-5 will fit. Look around and find the right part. It will sit entirely on top of the wheelhouse.

By the time you do all the fab work and modifications to make it work you could have built one from scratch. I'd follow the advice above and find a '55-'75 unit or build one.

A pre-76 factory from a CJ-5 is as close to a drop-in as it gets. I'm not sure if the early CJ-5s had the early-style top bow sockets on top of the wheelhouse or not, but if yours does they will have to be removed so the rollbar will sit flat on top. My flatty had them and I couldn't see a way to work around them so out came the air chisel and away they went.

A steel tub should have bow sockets behind the front seat. The roll bar slides up against the socket. Makes installation a snap - no measuring needed. Compress the bar slightly to go between the body rails, slide up against the bow sockets, drill and bolt. Drill the holes for the horizontal bolts first, since they will spread the bar slightly. There should be spacers to fill the gap between the body rails and the bar. Then drill down through the wheel house.

I have a 76 bar in my 73, and it had to be notched to clear the bow pockets
