I have been out shopping around and I came across an 87 GM s-10 with an automatic and a 2.8 TBI. I know that the 2.8 does not have a really good reputation, but I thought most of it was fuel related.

Has anyone used one of these in a CJ before? The truck is cheap and it has no options so it could be an easy swap into a CJ with most of the donor parts there.

The intended use would be daily driving in a real light CJ-5 that would be sub-3k for weight.

I do have the 90-degree v6 on hand that I could use if I need to.

Just thinking out loud here. The truck was offered to me this afternoon so I am thinking about it.

    Thanks for your thoughts.

The problem with the 2.8 TBI is not a fuel issue but a lower and upper end issue. The intake manifold bolts work loose over time and leak coolant into the crankcase, frequently with no external signs. This wipes out a lower end that isn't strong to begin with. The 2.8 was always meant as a budget engine pure and simple. I'd go with the 90* GM V-6 which is typically a much stronger design.

    Thanks Nick.

I know it is a common complaint with XJ guys. Just because it is a good deal doesn't mean you should buy it I say to myself. Sounds like a good engine etc. to avoid. I may pick it up for the TBI stuff.

Any concerns with using the TBI parts for swap pieces for other Jeeps etc?

    Thank you, ROB

I used to own a 2.8 Blazer-it died a death exactly as described by Nickmil. Before that, it was one of the most underpowered vehicles I ever drove. Avoid that engine like the plague!

I had an 86 S-10 with the 2.8, it was awful!! granted it had a 100,000 miles on it, but I've driven 4 cylinders of the same era with more oomph to them.

You could grab the TBI and associated parts. Standard GM fare afaik. Might be good to retrofit an older small engine to simple fi.
