    Hi everybody!

    after wanting a jeep forever, I finally fell into a restored 1970 cj5. it's got a 3 speed trans, and a 231 buick under the hood, with an edelbrock intake and carb, new rollcage and box steel bumpers. basically already set up for some light dune riding and trail work. The woman i bought it off of didnt know anything about it, as she got it in a divorce settlement. for five grand, I think I did alright, if anything, I think i can get my money back.

    Now time for the dumb questions.

    1. it has the hookup on the trans/transfer case for a PTO or overdrive unit to make it driveable past 55 mph, but none of parts to my knowledge. what am i looking at installing a setup?

    2. The engine has some chrome Mr. Gasket valve covers, but they dont have an oil filler on them, but they do have breathers. Do I just pop off a breather and add oil there?

    3. Driving over a bump on the way to work, at about 25 mph, it will get a side to side wobble, like a womp-womp-womp wobble, and i usually have to slow all the way down to about 5 mph to straighten up. Something to be worried about or just the nature of the beast?

    4. it's got a 3rd shifter, that sits low to the floor, bent at a 90 degree angle with the knob pointing to the firewall. what's it for? my guess was the

    I appreciate the help, All of my experience with off roading is with 80's trucks and HMMWV's. I need to get schooled up.

    For a overdrive, you'll just need to find a rear shift warn/saturn/atv. Herm the Overdrive Guy is the guru. Check out his site or give him a call. He just finished mine up and is shipping it now.

    On the three shifters, if you have the twin stick Dana 18, here is the shift pattern:

    Welcome.
    1.) Definitely talk to Herm. He has all the parts and knowledge...fair warning, od's are not cheap!

    2.) That's where I add oil to my 225, they are basically the same engine.

    3.) I would definitely be concerned about the wobble. I had a lifted Cherokee that did the same thing, but not my CJ. I chased the death wobble around my suspension system for a year, and finally gave up and traded it in! Does it have a lift? What size tires are you rolling?

    4.) The shifter your describing sounds like the transfer case.

    Definitely need pictures! Inside, outside, underneath...the more pics the better. There's a thread on posting pics on the "Announcement, Page, and Forum Discussion", if you need help.

    Also, there are mo stupid questions. Always try searching the forums first; but, if you can't find it ask. Everyone is friendly, and more than helpful.

    Good luck!

    Pics of your shifters?
    Your description sounds like the stock single lever transfer case shifter, but if you have 2 other shifters..........IDK

    The wobble can be caused by many things:

    * Loose axle/spring plate ubolts
    * Insufficient caster angle caused by lift springs (fix with steel shims). Target is 5 to 7 degrees positive caster.
    * Improper toe-in
    * Worn steering connections: TREs, steering box.
    * Worn/loose wheel bearings

    As said, give us lots of pics and we can help. :)

    Also check the bushings in the shackles and frame hangers. If they are loose, makes for some interesting steering and will contribute to the "death wobble". Worn bearings on the king pins will also contribute. While wobble is a common problem in old Jeeps, it most definately is not the "nature of the beast" and should be addressed.

    Jack the front end up and start looking for movement. The wheels should have no perceptible movement other than rotational.

    Not sure on your shifters but would appear that there may be a PTO or OD shifter in the mix, not that that means the unit is still installed. We do need pics.

    Welcome to the best place for old CJ info.

    that is a pto, unfortunately no overdrive there,
    just a transmission, transfercase (passenger feet), and pto (between seats)

    from what little i know the shifter between the seats is engaged or disengaged for both the front and back of that unit in unison, both are on or off at once and never shift it while moving. at one point you might have had a pto driven winch.

    There's folks on here that can help you on the pto, better than me. Here's a link showing the different types (you might have to copy-paste the link) http://48cj2a.com/PTOs.htm

    I ended up selling my pto and winch, to fund a new od. I was more interested in a little more speed than a pto winch that I would never use.

    That is a clean looking Jeep! I would figure out the death wobble first, then look into getting an od.

    A PTO winch is a excellent thing to have, and you have the set-up for it.

    Great looking Jeep. Someone spent some time getting it to that point.
    My 70 doesn't have the OD but really doesn't need it - it will do 70 fairly easily and I don't want to find out how much faster than that it'll go.
    I would consider selling the PTO to fund an electric winch.
    The death wobble problem on mine is usually the axle/spring u-bolts getting loose so I would say check that first.

    X2 on U bolts.

    When I first bought mine I had that problem, had it checked out at a shop and my U bolts were near falling off.

    ps: I've been up to 80 in my 68 V6 (no overdrive), but the engine sounded like it was redlining, it was terrifying. :shock:

    I've already got an 8k smittybilt electric on the front end, so if I did hook up the pto again, I wouldn't need the front shaft. The rear hookup could be useful for someone, but not me. Don't really see myself using it for much ill probably end up selling it off towards an overdrive. I can get to 55 pretty quickly but it strains to get to 65.

    Ill get it lifted off the ground and give stuff the good old shake test this weekend.

    if you do decide to sell the pto hit me up cause i got a pto powered 6 ft finish mower and the looks on my neighbors faces would be pricless when they see me cutting the yard with my cj6

    yes it will probably take me 2 or 3 times as long to to do it compared to doing it with a push mower but i would be driving the jeep and curring the grass so i will be doing something i hate to do in my jeep so i might actually cut the grass more often

    Gearhead 1985, just FYI, to run a mower, you would also need the driveshafts, gearbox and 3 point hitch, which the OP doesn't seem to have.
