I never had any luck trying to weld up rust-through holes. The metal gets too thin at the edges and it seems like the holes just get bigger the more you try. For some of the patches I did I cut a piece of sheetmetal about 1" wide and spot welded them to the backside of the patch area. This gave me a rim to set the patch piece on which helped keep the patch flush with the body metal. It also acts as a heat sink to limit burn-through where the edges come together. I used .025 wire on all of the patches.

yeah im thinking i ll have to go that route... good thing HF has 10lb spools on sale!

i was concerned with the rolls in the floor pans, but im not even going to bother to try to make them or worry about them... its a FUN JEEP, not a hysterical resto..

best part about this whole project is the welding...

MAN i love to to the VELDINK!

Couldn't agree more. Although I really only used the hole punch part of this tool. Makes perfect holes for spot welding. I did use the flanger for one floor repair.

    Evening folks,

If you're patching holes, the best way to prevent blow through is to hold a chunk of copper behind the weld. I use a piece of copper pipe, slit and unroll to make it flat. Hold it behind the hole and weld as normal. The copper will hold the weld puddle in place until it cools, but will not stick to it.

I'm working on a rotisserie that will use large tires as I often have to move my work around on gravel.

    Later,
    Fritz

Pleased to report that these plans are awesome! Finished it up yesterday, added some holes in the top / sides of the swing pivot pipes to allow for a safety pin to go through in both flat and vertical orientations. Also added some standoffs to aid in painting.

I did have to modify the distance between the holes on my tailgate - they were different than those shown in the 3D plans.

    Huge thanks for the plans!

There was only one hiccup - Reno Salvage sent me. home with 10" of 0.313" wall tube, so the two tubes at the top of each end would not slip into one another. I decided to use sch. 80 dia. 2.5" black gas pipe out of a hurry to get this thing done to g et the Jeep out of my driveway before it rained on Saturday. So when I am done with my projeect, I will probably cut these off and replace with the correct 2.5" (2" i.d.) tube with thicker walls.

Now it's time to triage the body....
