I have no pipes coming out of the bottom of mine, but I do have two coming out of the factory sending unit. One to send fuel to the carb and the other, I'd always assumed would return fuel from the carb to the tank. Either way, the tank would work for either engine....(I think...insert "actually John" here as needed)

There is however an outlet in the bottom and a hole in the floor of the jeep. I'd always called this outlet a drain plug as I think it's pretty big...like 3/4" or something like an oil drain plug would be.

Are there tanks that have a return line going to the bottom?

James P Enderwies, my dad wanted to ask you where the return line originated, off the fuel pump or off the carbeurator?

John: No. The return fuel would have to push up thru the fuel in the tank. It is intended to go into the top and "drop down" onto the existing fuel in the tank.

Remember, the return outlet on the 3 port pump only has a 1/16" or less hole in the retury pipe fitted in the pump. Just enough to purge air and fuel from the pump to prevent vapor lock.

How bad is the tank? If not that bad have a radiator show acid wash and recoat it and you're good to go. Might be cheaper too.

The tank isnt in all that bad of condition from looking at it from the outside, but the inside is filled up with muck from god knows where. I would rather have a new tank installed just so I know that the whole system will be running correctly. Hmm now I have to track down a new 3 port mechanical pump... this should be fun. R)

Tuxman: No problem. Try Master # 40515. Usually available at NAPA.

Don't use a 4 cyl fuel tank with a :v6:. I did and it led to fuel starvation and vapor locking until I pulled it and threw it on the trash pile. It was brand new and I still have it, but the outlet for the fuel line is too small for the :v6:. That is why they say that the tank advertised is for a 4cyl. I replaced the whole underseat tank gig with a rear mounted 15 gallon later model CJ tank, and life is great! The entire 4 cyl. tank debacle was a nightmare. I had a special fitting and hose made up to mate the small outlet to the larger :v6: fuel line. I drilled and tapped the fuel neck to take the return line. In the end, the whole thing turned out to be for naught. When I replaced the underseat self immolation device with a proper gas tank, I replaced the fuel line from sending unit to pump with new 5/16" stainless fuel line and life is now good. Just my opinion and experience.

Great description, JK. I'm sure that's why I too have starvation issues as the fuel outlet is only 1/4".

Alan: That's what my spare is here that you saw. It has the 1/4" outlet in it, but no big deal. When I take it to the rad. shop to have the return fitting brazed in I'll just have them replace the outlet fitting with a 5/16" one.

BTW, a lot of people run the 4 cyl tanks on a refitted :v6: just fine. Go figure!

Alan, does your tank have the drain plug? If so use a brass adapter to convert from pipe thread to 5/16" inverted flare and plug the 1/4" outlet. I ran the 3B (231 OF) and my '70 CJ5 (hopped up 231) that way with no problems.

No, that was brazed over long ago. The fuel outlet IS the drain plug. :D

William: Great idea. You can get a brass hose barb with 1/8" npt already on it in 5/16" id. I've used many straight ones as water feeds on my steam Locos, but never seen an angled one. But I really think straight down would be fine.
