Where should the rotor be pointing when engine is @ TDC and dizzy is installed? I have a '79 motorcraft dizzy w/ a large Ford-sized cap & rotor (not stock). I don't know what markings I should be looking for in/on the dizzy for #1 sparkplug. My vehicle is a '76 w/ 304 and I only have the '76 TSM, not a '79 TSM for reference. If memory serves me correctly, when the dizzy is installed @ TDC shouldn't the rotor be pointing towards #1 cyl.?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Just to recap my situation:
    -Engine is @ TDC
    -Dizzy installed
At what or where should the rotor be pointing so I know I'm @ #1 sparkplug wire for cap installation?

    Thanks guys!

Yes, the rotor should be pointing to #1. Since I had my wires connected to the cap I just made a mark on the outside of the housing where #1 would be, that way I could be sure that the rotor was at the correct position.

That would be the #1 cylinder when on the compression stroke. You would be 180 degrees off if it's TDC on the exhaust stroke.

Yes, I understand. When @ TDC and I slide the dizzy down into the engine (and the dizzy casing is positioned in the proper direction) with the rotor only be able to point toward #1 sparkplug when dizzy is being installed or could it be installed w/ rotor pointing in some other direction? I mean, while installing the dizzy, will I need to make sure the rotor is pointing towards what direction? I hope ya'll understand my question. Thanks for the help by the way :)

You can shove it in at any position you want but remember if the caps are marked with a 1 it kinda sucks when you have a different plug wire on it. Also if you do it that way sometimes pre-made wire sets may not be long enough.

The rotor can point in as many different directions as there are teeth on the distributor shaft driving gear. Getting these things in with the rotor pointing in the right direction is a bit of an art but keep at it & you'll get it eventually :)

As you are installing the dizzy, turn the rotor to a few degrees before (clockwise) you reach where #1 plug wire is on the cap, that way when you slide the dizzy down and the teeth engage it will turn a bit toward #1 and hopefully you will be right there.

If not, carefully remove the dizzy, turn the rotor back just a little more and retry the installation.

Or if the wires are not installed then just be sure to set the wires, cap and rotor to where they need to be.

On my V8 it was not an option since I can't spin the dizzy around to get where I want, I had to do the first paragraph above to ensure the vacuum advance canister was not in the path of the power steering belt.

Thanks guys. Nwedgar, that's my situation as well, there's only a small window before touching the PS belt. I will try & try until we have success :)

If you are standing in front of the Jeep and looking down at the dizzy, my vacuum advance canister points to about the 4 o'clock position while #1 is timed to 8 degrees before top dead center.
