New Pulley Too Short

    Hi All,
I had a problem with my F-134 leaking at the front engine seal and determined that the pulley had some grooves in it allowing oil to seap past the front seal. I ordered a new pulley and seal but the new pullet is slightly different. The spud on the pulley that rides on the seal is shorter than my original. If I tighten the new pulley on the crank, the pulley will jamb against the timming gear cover.

Is it acceptable to put a shim or two on the crank before the pulley to get the additional 1/4" I need so the pulley will not rub on the gear cover? If so, any suggestions on what to use as a shim? I need a washer with a big hole but most dont come with a big enough hole.

    Thanks,
    Mike

what about sliceing a tube/pipe ,,,,,, as long as it was cut square and thick enough not to squish .the front pulley is really torqued on there I belive .

Why not just put a speedy sleeve on the old pulley? Much cheaper solution and works.

You can probably shim your new pulley but you may need a custom shim. Realize that this will miss-align the V-belt on the water pump and generator by the thickness of any shim installed.

Where do I find this speedy sleeve. Never heard of one.

Also, a shim on this problem would actually better align the pulley as it is the spud (if this makes sense) that is too short causing the pulley to bolt too far onto the crank.

Just about all the major seal manufacturers have the sleeves-CR, NAPA, National, etc. Take your old pulley to a real parts house and they will likely have what you need or can get one quickly. Just give the old pulley seal surface a light coat of preferably black RTV and press it on.

Found a speedy sleeve at Napa for $55 bucks (ouch). Those little bugers are pricey. Hope it works.

    Thanks for the advice,
    Learned something new again.

fill the grove with epoxy before installing sleeve . we use them at work all the time . A piece of PVC pipe make a great driver tool
