Ok, my '49 has this weird problem. It runs great and has tons of power for an Lhead. On my road, there are some steep hills. It powers up them just fine at first and then it starts to sputter like it is out of gas. I stop and it idles fine and will back down the hill on the idle. Turn around and it drives away like nothing happened. Thoughts?

So far, I have blown the lines out, cleaned the sediment bowl, I put a new accelerator pump in the carb and cleaned all jets. This problem used to be more frequent when I had the oil bath hooked up. I'm wondering now if I should start back at square one. Undo all the stuff I've done and see what does the trick. The only other thing I can think of is remove the exhaust. It wasn't on the jeep when I got it.

There are no "fuel filters", just sediment bowls. Never thought of the cracked line. How would that effect it? The fuel pump seems to be working. There is a discussion on the 2A page about the new gas destroying the diaphragms in them. Once when I took the sediment bowl off, gas sprayed all over the place. I guess it is good. I also left the bowl dry once and it filled up pretty good.

Sounds like it's starving for fuel. Check your pressure/ volume. Volume is likely the issue.

Thats what I was thinking too. I'm going to try adjusting that tomorrow and removing the sediment bowl I put on. Just start eliminating things.

Mine did the same the other day, I just figured it was low on fuel but it wasn't that low, I had to have a buddy tow me home.

I have one of those clear re-usable fuel filters by the motor and I noticed it is never full of fuel when the jeep is running, I'm thinking a fuel pump may be my issue.

Ok, I figured it out this morning. I never would have thought this was my problem since I had the sediment bowl right before the carb. The seat was plugged up with junk. I could barely see through it. At least it was an easy fix and she runs great now!

I'm not real familiar with these engines. What part is that, pictured above? Part of the fuel bowl assembly?

Looks like the seat for needle valve in the carb.

how can anything settle while a jeep is running?
ice crystals will stay suspended in gasoline because of the similar density, something interesting to look at when you sump the tank.
a big clear case pleated paper fuel filter after the sediment bowl is my choice, lots of surface area, can catch a lot of fine ice and still flow
