    Does this seam right.
some time ago I disassembled, cleaned, put in some new seals and gaskets, and reassembled my Dana 18 transfer case, put it back in the jeep and have not touched it sense. I resently put a taller lift on the front end and at the end of the process i realized i had maxed out my front drive shaft and it is now to short and i am now leaking gear oil from where the u-joints connect to the transfer case. Two questions. #1 what is the best way to lengthen my drive shaft and #2 by over extending the drive shaft do you think i might have dislodged the oil seal and if i did move the oil seal from over extending the drive shaft ( should that have happened ) and what is stopping that from happening if it over extends when i am off road.

If you over extended the driveshaft it would come apart, that is assuming it has a slip joint like 99.9% of them.

#1 Take the driveline to a driveline shop to have it lengthened. Before you go, call and ask them how they want you to measure for length.

#2 Over-extending the drive shaft should have no effect on the oil seal. If the nut holding the yoke in place is tight, the yoke doesn't move in or out as the driveshaft extends and compresses. You may have some oil working it's way down the splines of the yoke. Some people recommend using a little RTV sealant on the splines when you install the yoke.

    Guy,
Thanks for some feedback. Yes my driveshaft is a slip joint, i never knew it could come apart into two peices, if my memory is correct the one and only time when i had the driveshaft out to clean and paint it i could extend and compress it and when it was in the extended position it would stop and not allow me to extend it any further. The reason i thought the lifting of the jeep had something to do with the leaking from the transfer case is because the transfer case did not leak before i lifted up the jeep and know it does, and the leak is kind of bad. when i put the transfer case back together on the work bench maybe i did not tighten the nut holding on the yoke tight enough. Could the fix maybe be as easy as removing the yoke, putting on some RTV and reinstalling the yoke.
