I am trying to get the steering column out of the steering box on my 69 CJ5. It is a Ross manual steering. I have removed everything from it except the shaft. The worm screw and bearings on both sides seem held tight but I can't figure out how. A Jeep rebuilding manual I am using for reference says basically at the point that I am at, I simply remove the shaft and be careful not to lose the bearings. Any ideas?

Have you removed the cover from the ross steering box? The sector shaft assembly and incorporated pins have to be pulled away from the steering shaft gear if I remember correctly.

Yeah, I have it broken down as far as I can. The bearings look good, so if I can't get the shaft out its not that big of a deal, but I have a new tub and need to drill a hole in the firewall. Seems it would be easier if they were separated.

Remove the box and column as an assembly.

This is where I am. I have removed a snap ring and I am led to believe from my reference book that the shaft should pull out, dropping bearings all over the floor. I would like to replace the bearings, and make the job of drilling the firewall easier.

I had this same issue a few weeks ago on my '58 CJ5. I gave up in disgust and cut the old steering column off with a hack saw and muscled the worm gear out. It was a pain in the butt and took about an hour. If your steering is really sloppy and you plan on replacing everything but the box itself, then this is an option. My steering was shot to hell. The Ross steering box is the only original part left in my steering setup. Replacing those 22 ball bearings will challenge your patience. It was an awful process.

THE JEEP CJ BUILDERS Manuel by Moses Lundel has an excellent section on rebuilding the Ross steering box. The bushings were tough to get out. You will likely have to have the new bushing reamed . Can take the curve by my house 15 mph faster

Mine was just the opposite, the new bushing slid into place but would spin in the casting. I set it with red locktite, that seems to be working so far.
