Dad's looking for a new MC for his '69 DJ5A, and his FLAPS told him it's not available. Is this MC any different than a '69 CJ master cylinder? He's looking into having the old one rebuilt, when I suspect they're the same and the auto parts store just can't cross-reference it.

    Thanks. :)

Good luck finding the MC for a '69 CJ at FLAPS. The Lockheed Wagner originals have long been unavailable, but recently Crown has shown up with a repop that you may be able to get. I don't know anything about its quality or construction (like is it the step bore like the original).

I dont know what auto parts store you used...but I work for O'Reilly Auto Parts right here in Springfield, MO and I just got a new master cylinder for my 1964 CJ5. Go to this link: http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/s....oap?year=1964&make=Jeep&model=CJ5&vi=1491899, and see if any of these are what you are looking for. I just got the Brake Best Select NMC2796 from our warehouse here in Springfield, MO......right across the street from my office. I know these Master Cylinders on our website are available. I hope this helps you! Let me know how it goes if you dont mind.

Yes, the master cylinders are different.
The DJ cylinder should have a bail wire to clamp the cover down while the CJ cylinder cover bolts down.
The internal parts are similar but they are not the same.
The 1969 DJ 5 uses cylinder #990862 for LHD or #990857 for RHD, repair kit #943069
The main problem with modern replacement cylinders is that the taps are too large to fit the Jeep flare nuts.

Excellent information, the PO of my DJ5A swapped in a rebuilt master cylinder. I suspect when he said DJ5, the counter man thought postal/mail JEEP and sold them one for a RHD, even thou it is LHD. Having the outputs on the wrong side made for some interesting brake line bends that have now been corrected.

    Thanks for the replies.

djbutler and kthiltgen: After looking at Kaiser-Willy's offerings, I didn't know the CJ's used the older, rounded, single-chamber MC's all the way through '66, but after looking at their pictures I realized one big difference between the CJ master cylinder and a LHD postal Jeep master cylinder - the port are on the other side. So it would appear I just answered my own question, that they are indeed different, if not only the ports being on the opposite side.

Oldtime: Thanks for the numbers. Whose part numbers are those?

I don't think Ken will mind if I answer. Those are Kaiser-Jeep PNs. 99xxxx is late 60s, 94xxxx is a little earlier.
