My 1959 CJ5 has grooved leaf springs. I wanted to replace one set with originals but found out that the originals are not grooved. I had never seen grooved leaf springs before. A search of the internet shows Corvette used them. Did any early Jeeps ever come with grooved leaf springs or you think someone put Corvette springs on this Jeep?

    Regards
    -Dave

Those *are* factory stock springs, now un-obtanium. Not sure when they went to un-grooved, not sure why they used grooved to begin with. What's wrong with the pack you want to replace?

There are 7 leaves in the front springs. All springs are in great shape...except for the front passenger side. The backs of the bottom three leaves are sheared off. I can't locate a stack of grooved springs and I hate to replace both fronts with modern repo....I'm thinking of just replacing the bottom three leaves with a later set of flat leaves.

I'm trying to stay original with this jeep since it has 19,000 original miles on it.

I have pitched more sets of those than I can count. I would say that 99% were flat and not useable - should I start keeping them :)

The grooved springs were stock and made by Liggett for Willys. Mather supplied the springs prior to 1953 or so. This according to the G503.

I think they are grooved so they will hold water and dirt, so they will rust holes through the center of the leaves.
At least that's what mine did...............
