    I'll keep trying...it's become a quest....

Thanks for the suggestions..lots of farm implement dealers around here, and NAPA is not far away either....

EDIT: The nearest NAPA store shows it in stock on their web site. I'll go tomorrow....

Napa had it....I feel like I've found the grail or something.

It says that it is non-corrosive to non-ferrous metals like brass and copper....just as advertised...$40 a gallon!

I noticed much smoother shifting from my t15 with gl4 than gl5. Easier shifting with the t-case also. Even with identical viscosities. I've also used BG syncroshift synthetic with great results.

    BG?

I probably won't get mine changed until it warms up a bit.....about April.....

Normally I'm not a big fan of additives (snake oil) but I have used BG MGC in the past with good results.

Love BG. Use BG MOA in my truck and will use it in the car after a few miles.

I have a gallon of that Ford transmission oil. If I remember correctly it was very inexpensive. I never used it on the Jeep because I was afraid the GL1 might mess something up. What exactly is the difference between a GL1 and GL4 oil?

The Copper Strip Tarnish Test (ASTM D130-10) is a standard test of a lubricant to indicate how corrosive it may be to copper alloys in a transmission (like bronze bushings). Whether it's GL4 or GL5 is not really a reliable way to tell.
Below is a partial ratings list I found by googling. A "1A" rating is great, while "4B" is really bad.

Enjoyed the humor with the comments, especially living in Calif., where we have all those thingies you spoke of... I will look around. We have a NAPA store and they seem to cater more to my needs than your typical automotive store run with a bunch of teens who wouldn't know a muscle engine if it hit them in the head. Thanks...

I just rebuilt all my gearboxes and OD so was interested in this discussion. Found Sta Lube GL3/GL4 campatible oil at my local speed shop. Says it is compatible with all brass metal. California is difficult to find anything that is not mainstream.

I bought some gl4 a while back and used it. GL4 isn't available at FLAPS. GL4/5 is available, but it is the qualities of the "5" part that can cause brass problems

Brad Penn oil is what sticks in my mind -- I'm 200 miles from the shop at present, but I'm 98.77542901 % sure it was Brad Penn oil.

What does FLAPS mean? I see it often around here and assume it is a parts supplier but I am not sure. Thanks. WCP

It's not just about the oil attacking the copper alloys although that is important. It's also about the lubricity and friction properties of the additives in the oil. Many GL-5 rated oils have different characteristics in these areas creating shifting and wear issues.
