I have a new set of timing chain/gears and a new oil pump for a amc 401. I was wondering if these would fit the 304. Does anyone know if they are interchangeable or are there differances that would keep them from being used in the 304. Thanks Walt

Walter, did you buy them from a parts store if you did then they should be able to tell you what you need to know or someone hear will chime in soon.

The oil pump on a 401 (and 304) is in the front timing cover. You can buy the gears, or the timing cover, but you can't buy the oil pump separately like in other engines. The timing cover and pump gears are the same for all the late AMC V8s. 99% sure all the '66 and later AMC V8s have the same timing chain and gears as replacement parts. Several internet sources show the same parts for all years and displacements. The 401 may have come with a steel gear, and the rest (304, 360) had nylon teeth. You should use a steel gear as a replacement.

Thanks for the info. What I do have is the oil pump gears, timing chain and steel timing gears. I bought them when rebuilding a 401. I bought everything new, pistons/rings, reground crank, new timing chain and gears, The whole package. Anyway I ended up with an extra timing chain/gears and oil pump gears.
