In keeping with my resto theme I am looking for a source for stock type upholstery for my 70 CJ5. I did the seats on my Camero a couple years ago with a kit from year one. Also does anyone have a pic of the stock seat covering for that year? Im pretty sure mine have been recovered. Mike

    Merry Christmas to All!

The type or color of seat covering depends on the trim code number. Is yours still intact?

I'd be interested in this as well. Driver's seat is good, but the passenger needs reupholstering. Where do you get the trim number?

Try www.smsautofabric.com they helped ID mine with just a description and a masurement of the factory pinstripes. Even sent a sample of what they could get. I'll be using them for the fabric when I get around to doing the split bench I purchased. Good luck.

Trim # is 289. Where do I look to figure the color out? By the way Steve did you ever get that radiator shroud, if so how did it work out? Mike

After reading Mikes story about his re-upholstery job I went to Ebay and found the guy he got his covers from. Looks like a set of covers is bring around $60 now I think I will bid on some as they look good to me and I can not beat the price. Mike

    Merry Christmas!!

I've talked to a couple of guys in our area that re-upholster boat interiors and they both said they would have no problem doing them. I haven't gotten a price from them yet, because I'm not at that stage, but they said they were simple to do. Just thought I'd post as an alternative.

    Mike,

Very interesting article! I see you mention you're 6'3" - I'm 6'4", and I'm wondering about a couple modifications to make my CJ5 a bit more comfy to drive. I see you removed the seat sliders - did you also move the seat back at all? I had thought about doing that. It wouldn't be much - maybe an inch or two - but it would make a difference.

    Also, I'm wondering about this:
What do you mean by "wheelhouse notch?" I'm not familiar with that term.

The one and only local upholstery shop wanted $260 to both front seats so I opted to do them myself. Mike

Trim #289 (Option) is listed as Rawhide color (Code M-12). I don't know the difference between code and option numbers, Jim might though. I've seen the Rawhide color mentioned before on this forum but don't remember exactly where or when. Sorry. SMS, mentioned earlier in this thread, is the company I used to supply my fabric. Good selection but very pricey.

I haven't bought the radiator shroud yet but should be available when or if needed. Other projects and purchases have shifted my attention for the moment.

Are you back in town? About time to begin thinking about Borrego again, don't you think? John Rodko and I should have our trailers by then and I'm sure we'd like to try them out. We is goin' to be just like Jim and Glenn now.

That is the same outfit that Mike Boyink got his upholstery from. I have been watching there auctions and black covers go for between $60-80. I E-mailed them and they want $140 give or take $20 to do them in a brown color. They seem like nice folks and are real fast to reply to my E-mails. Mike

    :(

I paid $125. Compared to the estimates for a pro to do them it still seemed like a deal.

Just Thought I'd jump in with a question. Nice job on the covers Mike, they look great! Any one seen covers for the earlier seats? A local upholstery shop quoted me an outragous price of $275 EACH! If that's the going rate for the early seats, I'm definatly going to figure a way to do them myself. Has anyone picked up the low back cover sets from 4WD Hardware? I'm curious if they are open in the folding area or would they work on the early seats? Any info would be great.

see the earlier post by beeser, use the link to E-bay within that auction is the E-mail address of the guy that made Mike's seat covers. these are done in the earlier style lowbacks. If you watch E-bay he auctions sets in black only they seem to go for around $70. Mike
