I would like to update the seats in my M38A1 to something a bit more comfortable, and safer - my wife just realized the pax seat is hinged and the only thing holding it/her in is a single seat belt. There is not a lot of room, although I have heard of the rear fender wells being notched to allow for seats. Any suggestion on which seats to look at?

    Thanks,

I think a lot of that decision needs to be based on what you use the Jeep for. If it is mostly on road over not too great a distance, by all means go cheap or even pick & pull. If it sees a lot of trail use, suspension seats are the way to go. The Corbeau's are a good value and a lot cheaper than Mastercraft. I'm using the Baja RS's.

My wife had to have several verts fused in her back (6 of them) with cages and such. I could not go cheap for her, so I went with PRP Suspension seats. Expensive, but they allow her to ride all day in comfort - worth every penny to us.

These are good GM seats, not sure what they are out of. I bought them at a swap meet. I have them mounted on the original seat frames.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the input. Looks like either the corbeau or PRP seats - wife saw seat heater and said "buy". Next question is, how much cutting of the fender wells to all them to fit?

I used the original seat bases like scott did and did not cut the fender well. the seats are about 1" in front of the rear fender.

Depends on the seats, your body and steering wheel/column, but mounting the seats a little higher allows them to move back a little farther. If you have PS (smaller steering wheel) and a tilt column, you may not need to notch the wells. I think I would get the seats and mock them up before I started cutting metal.

I bought industrial seats. Fork lift seats from Northern Hyd.
Can't complain, they are 15 years old and still fine.

  12. the big thing for me was getting them low enough to see out the window correctly, I had to refab the seat brackets till they were as close to the gas tank as possible.

I had the same issue Chuck, the Bestop Trailmax lowbacks sat too high. I'm a short guy at 5' 8" and my head almost touches the top.

I just found a local shop that is recovering my stock seats. It was a little pricey, but worth it IMHO.

PRP seats arrived this weekend - very nice, thanks Warloch. I set them on the floor and we watched a travel video. I didn't hook up the seat heaters though i did offer my wife a heating pad.

Glad you like them - I have to order a rear seat sometime this year and will get a bench from them as well.

I didn't know they made rear seats. I have a stock M38A1 back seat; do they use the stock frame or an entirely new seat/frame?
