Transmission grinds when shifting from neutral to fisrt and when down?

The three speed tansmission in my 1957 willys jeep keeps grinding when put into gear from neutral. But is I wait a second before shifting into first it will not grind? I have already adjusted the clutch cable several times and still nothing. Am I looking at replacing the pilot bushing or do I have other problems?

First gear is not synchronized whereas 2nd and 3rd are. Does it grind going into 2nd and 3rd? If not then probably normal. You basically need to be stopped to shift down to 1st.

I would never shift into first if I'm moving.

If you're moving, or the engine is revving above idle, in my experience, it grinds. T14 rebuilt 2k miles ago.

Learn to down shift like a truck driver and you can double-clutch it into first while moving.

This is all happening while its sitting still in the drive way. And It will grind a little bit when when put into second or third while sitting still. I drove it for the first time today on the road and when I tried to down shift from third to second it grinded but if I mashed the clutch in and wait a second before shifting it will shift no problem?

Hmmm, you shouldn't have issues from second to third and vice versa.

Check the fluid level and type. Is it cold out? Can make a difference. Too thick of oil can cause this too. A sticky pilot bushing will also.

Its not to cold out and I changed to fluid it has 85w gear oil in it. The shop manual calls for 90w the old fluid was burnt. I was thinking the same thing with the pilot bushing sticking. Do the pilot bushings stick from dirt and mud getting in them or just from wear and tear?

Yes I have adjusted the clutch several times thinking that was the problem. But it didnt fix it are the clutch cables prone to stretching? Or should I just go ahead and pull the trans and put a pilot bushing in? Is there a pilot bearing that I could put in its place instead of a bushing?

I'm wondering if the clutch is balanced properly.
When I had my clutch looked at, the owner said it was improperly balanced.

On a side note, I stretched out my clutch release cable, by popping the clutch while breaking.

Can you replace the clutch cable without pulling the transmission?

Yes, the clutch release cable is threaded on one end, and hooks on the other. Tomorrow I'll see if I can take pictures and measure my relatively new cable.

Ok thanks I would also like to know what speed I should wait till it down shift between 3rd and 2nd my jeep has 5.38 gear ratio in the rear end to? I think this might be part of my problem to? This is my first jeep so I'm still learning and I'm not used to a 3spd trans I'm used to 5spds.

Do you know which three speed you have?

I follow this for shifting my t14.
    Start, 1st when not moving
    1st, shift to 2nd, 12 mph
    2nd, shift to 3rd, 30 mph.

Wait... I can't remember for sure, I haven't driven mine in a while (body mount trouble), and it's completely second nature. I think that's it.
I don't engine brake, or downshift much. I just wait till it feels right, I think it's around 25...

I'm sure another member can enlighten us.

I'll move my JEEP out of my garage tomorrow and get the pics and measurements posted here.

OK, we'll definitely have to wait for another member who's familiar with the T90. I, unfortunately, am not.

sounds like the syncros between 2nd/3rd are worn out.

You said you drove it for the first time yesterday. How long has this jeep been sitting up or was the PO driving it regularly? If it has been sitting for quite some time then the clutch disk may have tended to rust to the pressure plate. If this is the case then I would intentionally slip the clutch several times to clean the clutch surfaces (smooth it out) and see if that cures it.

Like Walt says. A new clutch friction disc will tend to do this too, until it gets worn in a little. Was it replaced recently?

Also I'd check, is the throw-out bearing fork mounted exactly on it's pivot correctly, etc?
