You need the bull gear, nut, washer, and Tcase cover to run without the OD.

Going by what Herm says, the overdrive cuts the tranny and engine speed by 25%.
I run 5.38 finals. Cutting those numbers by 1/4 means the engine and tranny see a final of around 4.09.

By my reckoning I should be able to put in 4.10's or 4.11's. By changing the rearend gears, instead of putting in the overdrive, I then cut down on the wear to ALL of the spinning stuff because it is all turning at a lower speed. Not just the engine and tranny.

And with 4.10's I will still be able to do all the off roading I want to.

Got some time to work on the jeep yesterday. I wanted to seperate the OD from the t-case and t-case from the trany. Here is what I did.. I took out the longer 5 bolts that mount the OD to t-case and tried to pull the OD off. It would not come, so I took out the 4 shorter bolts that hold the back cover on the OD, poped off the cover, removed the pin and unscrewed the nut and the OD slid off but it looks like some of the OD gears are still in there on the shaft and I cant get them off. I unbolted the t-case from the trany and tried to pull it off but no luck. I looks like those OD gears need to come out before the t-case will slide off. I can't figure out how to get the rest of the OD gears out. wish I could post pics, but don't have a working camara right now.
any help would be greatly appreciated.. Starting to feel like I got in over my head here....

Once those 5 long bolts are out, the OD case WILL come off. It may (or in your case-will) require some carefull prying. You will not be able to separate the transfer from the transmission with it on there as there is a special nut holding the bowl gear on and with it in place, it will not come appart. There is enough room to pry around most of the case but be careful you do not mare up the mating surface.

Can you tell me where this special nut is that holds the bowl gear on?? So, once I get that bowl gear off the t-case should pull off the trans.. That would be great, then I can see in there and find out what happened. So far all the gears on the OD and in the t-case look fine, but when I turn the output shafts, something isn't right. got to be something going on in there somewhere. Thanks for the help
I just read herm the overdrive guys instructions for removing the OD. Sounds like I need to reinstall the end cover and bolts and the case including those gears I cant get out should slide out. Then there is a snap ring in there that comes off and the t-case should then be able to be removed.. Let ya know how it go's if I can get to it today..

Today I put the nut, pin, and end cover back on the OD, and per herms instructions used two screwdrivers to back the OD out. IT WOULD NOT COME OFF! I tried for hours, I did find some ground-up metal pieces inside the OD. I don't know if they are from the OD or the T-case. Is there another approach to pulling the OD off. I went from screwdrivers to small pry-bars and would not come off. The most I have gotten it pulled back is maybe a 1/4". Per Herm's instructions you take out the 5, 3 1/2" bolts the mount the OD to the T-case and use two screwdrivers to pry it off. Am I missing something??
