Distributor differences for the 225

So the other day I did a tune up on the Dauntless and noticed that between 1966 and 67 the distributor cap and distributor were differnt part numbers. Not only that but tower one is in a different location. I was woundering if anyone else has run into this problem or if it is only me. And also if there is a part difference between these two, how do i tell what is the right distributor to run.
    thanks

IIRC there were two type distributors used on the 225 - a Prestolite and a Delco. Would that account for the differences?

yes there were an my 68 had the earlier one, man i had a heck of a time figurin that one out one weekend the caps dont interchange. all the parts store computers show the later one for 68

From what I have been reading, the ODD fire has a different cam that opens the points, it has to do with the dregs between each cam lobe. The rotor is also different. When I got my 66 with the ODD fire engine it ran like crap after doing some reading and buying the correct parts it's running much better.

Yes, it does, however there were two different caps for the Delco odd-fire..The part numbers are here if one wanted to search for them.

What Patrick said - two versions of the Delco and the Prestolite. My nieghbor was having issues at the end of the summer and we had 6 distributors laying out to find a good setup for him, the FLAPS had to order the part, and when it came it, it was wrong.

Ok, so the part numbers that I am working with at this time are duralast numbers. which for the 66 are a DR994 with tower on to the right of the gate, and 67 and up are DR982 with the tower on the gate. Those are from autozone, now when i checked napa, they brought up the cross reference for the DR994 till 68. Is it possible that the PO installed the wrong Distributor cap on this engine before me, and if so should i swap out the cap and distributor at the same time just to be on the safe side. Or is there not that much difference between the two to even worry about. That maybe a dumb question, but im still trying to learn these old school engines.
    Thanks for the help

FYI: the delco has 2 different caps, one (for the :v6:) has the window offset, the other (for an inline) has the window centered. either cap will work, but the center window unit won't let you adjust the dwell with the motor running.

When I got my Dauntless the PO had the wrong rotor and cap it ran but not very well.

I would NOT recommend setting the dwell on a Dauntless with it running-the fan is WAY too close for comfort!

mine 68 wouldn't run right with the 68 cap, once i fugured out that 67 was the cap I needed I just went with that.

So it sounds like i'll be bringing back the distributor cap that i bought and getting the one for the 66 then. Thanks for all the infomation guys, I learn alot from this forum. Espicially for these dauntless engines.

Doug I had no problem setting the dwell while it was running on my 1966 V-6. If I was to try this before I installed the correct cap and set the timing to the factory setting yes I would have lost my fingers.

Of course you can adjust the dwell on the O.F. while it is running. Why else would GM make the cap with the window? If you have #1 on the cap and the rotor positioned to fire it then your window and allen tool will be far enough away from the fan to not be dangerous. The flexible allen tool is the best for this anyways. Have done it many times over the years on my V6.

    Just my 2 cents.
I lost all the hide off all 4 knuckles on my hand one time, so...

It's a moot point for me (no pun intended :)) as I converted mine to Pertronix.

The Pertronix is on my list of thing to do. But can anbody tell me if both caps would work on this engine. and if not what would be the easiest way to tell what one I need.

I 'believe' you can tell which cap you need by lining up the points sets with the door to work on the dwell. If memory serves, the two don't mix and match.

That photo really helped, along with me spending close to an hour in the garage trying to get everything together. all went well except for the condensor that i picked up today. There is no way that it will mount in the location it is surposed to go. What part numbers and from where have others gotten their points and condensors from. The one I got was from work, and I'll just say, i hate computorize cataloging, will not work with the bracket that came with it. And the originall one was chewed up. It looked as if it got to close to the distributor shaft. I wouldnt mind doing a pertronix on this but i want to get the CJ6 up and running before the weather gets to bad.

I used the uni-set points/cond combination. Always worked well for me.
