    Hi Gang;

Well here I go with my project. I bought a 63 CJ6 in January and have begun some minor tear down. This 6 has a 4.192 Perkins diesel which makes it a pretty rare bird. Unfortunately it has a cracked block. Fortunately, I have found a replacement engine in Missouri (thanks to Andy Howell) and should be here in New Hampshire within the next two weeks. All the fuel trim (lines, injector pump and fuel injectors have been removed from the replacement but have been rebuilt and included. The bad engine is very complete (along with the rest of the jeep). I will have an excellent reference when it comes time to put things back together.

The only things I have done so far are to remove the fenders so I can size things up and begin marking the harness. I'm taking plenty of pictures.

I know you guys love picks, so here we go....

    mb82 I feel great!

At first I was wondering how bad the block was. Yeah that might cause a bit of an issue. With some JB weld and some duct tape I bet it could be repaired though R)

I could JB Weld that piston hanging out of there too!

    That's not a cracked block.

That's a hole in the block!

So here is the replacement Perkins with the fuel trim removed. The engine runs so I believe it will be fairly a straight forword process to get it running.

And the lift pump side. Note the alternator. I'll be asking questions down the road about how to wire it. The engine that's in the jeep now has a generator and regulator. This looks to be a Delco 10 SI. I have to admit to being torn between using the alternator and sticking with the generator.

Um, yes, a 12SI thank you Eric. That is an informative link that you sent, thanks very much! Can anyone point me to a thread which would walk me through the process of eliminating gen/reg and converting to the 12SI? There is none that I could find.

Not the most ideal situation, but managed to get it into our barn and onto the engine stand.

I got a fair amount done today, mostly cleaning greasy parts and painting components like the secondary fuel filter and lift pump. I replaced the diapgragm in the lift pump as well.

Somewhat of a problem surfaced. The PO had removed the gear adaptor and I didn't know how to orient it so that the injector pump is properly timed. There is a mark on the adaptor (factory) but not the fuel pump gear. After quite a bit of cleaning I found a scratch on the gear and I hope that it's oriented properly.

You can barely make out the scratch on the fuel pump gear at the 3:30 position.

Here is the gear with the gear adapter installed. This adaptor accepts the quill shaft of the injector pump.

The PO had the injectors and the injector pump rebuilt. I finally went through the boxes that came with the crate and there are plenty of spares...another set of injectors, another injector pump, fuel lines and a completely disassembled starter. mehh

I need to finish getting the engine degreased and primed/painted. I'll wait for a day that's not so humid for that task. It will be the same color as the injector pump.

    The rebuilt injectors.

I test fitted the injector pump to assure the quill shaft mates with the pump drive gear. :)

man, I'm thinking, where the heck did you find another 192 block? you got lucky!! was it a salvage pull from a Massey F?

Actually no, I searched threads and found someone in MI who had one sitting in the corner of his shop. He had it stored for about 6 years doing nothing. I contacted him and explained the scope of my project and he agreed to part with it. It is an original from a CJ and not from a Massey. There are some very specific parts that were fitted so I'm glad I didn't have to go that route.

The shipping to NH was a bummer ($360.00) but there are very few of these left so I didn't balk.

Very cool project. Definitely not something you see commonly. I've never seen one in person so this is way cool to watch!

Thanks Nick, it may take me a while. I have been looking for a CJ Perkins project for about 10 years! I was quite fortunate to find an unmollested specimine in VT, the only modification being a gun rack on the dash. My understanding is that it was owned by the US Forestry Service up until the early 80's

My goal is to get it running this summer and fix the brakes. I'll do the body work over the winter. I'm looking for winter storage since we need our whole barn space for goats, chickens and a horse...and naturally about 200 bales of hay.

We have a large room which connects our house with the barn which has 220V service. I may wind up doing the body work in there if nothing turns up. The problem is that it's also my girls art studio (we'll see if that works!) R)
