Does a electronic ignition module need to be grounded?

Does the electronic ignition module need to be grounded?

Yesterday I tried to start my 79/5 to no avail the only thing I heard was a slight click at the distributor. The engine was running fine before I took off the front clip and was wondering if I may have a grounding problem. The battery wasn’t fully charged at 12.34 but should have been enough to at least turn the engine I do have voltage at the starter solenoid. I haven’t fully investigated the problem and thought I would ask for some of your opinions before I start. Thanks in advance for your help.

the module not being grounded would not prevent the engine from turning over
but the module needs to be grounded before the engine will start

 

Jim - The slight click is coming from the distributor or vacuum advance control unit not the starter. The starter and starter solenoid aren't making any sound at all.

 

Sounds like a problem at the Selinoid, or the Starter. I had the same problem and it turned out to be the ignition switch. Pull the wire from the I terminal and check the voltage when the ignition is in the Crank postion, or just attemp to jump from hot power to the I terminal (or right across to the starter terminal). This will ensure that your ground is correct. If you jump across and the starter cranks than your ground is just fine.
