I'm going to be removing the dash on my 74 CJ5 in the near future and would like to get an idea of scope of the process. First time for this. I've read a couple of the threads here and have a basic idea, but would like to get your thoughts on exactly what has to be removed. From what I've seen/learned, I'll have to fold down the windshield, remove the bolts along the top of the dash, the bolts holding the steering column, possibly a bolt or two on the underside of each lower corner, etc. (the obvious stuff). But do I have to remove the spedo cable, any other wires, the parking brake mechanism, or any penals or brackets? I really just want to be able to tilt it back enough for me to work on the wiring.

    Thanks in advance...

you will likely have to remove the speedo cable and the park brake release lever also. you dont have to take off the park brake assy. Might also have to unbolt the plastic piece that the heater controls are in in order to get much slack. that should be about it.

Any tricks to removing the spedo cable?

You can reach up under the dash and remove the speedo cable, or I find it easier to remove all the bolts and tip the dash forward, then reach in behind the dash and remove the cable. I also use a one by two piece of wood to help hold the passenger side flat. I put one end up on the heater itself, the put the other end on the seat. Helps to keep the dash flat while working on the wiring.
