Would like advice/opinions on seat color

I'm restoring my '59 and trying to keep it as authentic as possible. The paint/trip tag is missing so I have absolutely no idea what color the seats were originally. I believe the red paint on the body is the original color and it will be that color again.

It looks like the seats were two-toned, red on the sides with white surface. If I have them redone, I can keep that color scheme -- assuming it is original to the Jeep but there is no way to know for sure.

The red/white upholstery seems kine of cheesy to me. What do you think?

kaiserwillys.com has some canvas seats in different colors, which I think would go pretty well....I can't find them on the site but in their print catalog they have them....I think in tan, black, red, and olive.

I sold/gave/lended my 55 CJ to my father, but I gotta put it all back together and do the body work for him ( I gots the mad skillz yo ) I like the color red you got, and want something just like it, with seats and wheels done in a creme or sand color. Looks good in my head, anyhow Mine came with the exact same tires, too.

 

I'd go with yer basic black.

 

I'm skeptical that these seats are original to the Jeep. Usually they were black or buff (beige, putty) color.

Hopefully someone will tune in (Ken?) that has some definitive info about the trim codes from that year.

 

Those seats are the same as my originals on the '57, except they are green with light (grey? cream?) panels to go with the poly green paint. They have the vertical stitching on the back panel, but not the seat. The panel on the back of the seat is also light.

BTW, I vote for the red & white.

 

My 1960 had one seat that looked just like yours. I went with black though 'cause light colors and me just don't go well together.

 

Interesting, black wasn't even an option. I'm wondering if my seats were the y-60 Light Gray Toned print Vinyl and President Red vinyl facing. It sounds ugly but it would be cool to have it authentic (at least appear authentic.)

 

I don't see anything on the list w/ a white or gray facing as your picture shows. Still questioning if they are original to the JEEP. Surprised black wasn't an option. Still learning...

 

Yeah probably not original, the passenger's seat was all gray and not even the same style so the seats were probably changed out at some point. But I like the idea of having the reupholstered to some sort of "period correct" fashion.

It seems to me, and others may disagree, that what they are referring to as "facing" may actually be the sides/rear and that the light gray is very light, almost a dirty white and that is the seating surface. When I had my seats redone I was thinking about going white/red since I had that same seat in mine. I just thought that after 50 years the white was so abused and filthy that it looked the way it did. Gray makes more sense now though.

 

Interestingly, someone posted this in the eBay/Craigslist forum. This picture shows a '60 with the apparently the same fabric that was on my seats, except mine are buckets and these are 60/40. I think I will have mine reupholstered in these colors.

Yea, they look alright. I was wondering, too, if I had the terms reversed. Facing seems to me like it would be the top and front of the cushions but it might be just the opposite. Sure seems that way.

 

Wish it was bigger but found this and brown looks good!!

 

This is what came on my 65. I plan to use the same look but hope to go with a fabric instead of vinyl.
