Very cool. Looks like the negatives were printed backwards.

Photobucket messed it up when I rotated the picture.

    Wow, that's neato.

Lots of detail for a Jeep fan in those pictures. Is the right rear fender indented, or did they apply the rectangular clearance light to the surface? I would guess it's indented - that would make the Ren 1 tub unique.

What customer would want those tires and wheels? Beach drivers? The beach cities in So Cal (IIRC Newport Beach, and San Clemente?) used a setup like that - wide wheels with passenger car tires. Good floatation for cheap.

Interesting with the chrome front bumper. Or maybe I have missed that before.

This thread made me run out to the shop and take a look at my Renegades. Here's what I found, the 70RI rear side lights are flush mounted and the 71RII's are indented. My 70RI was purchased in Atlanta and has a build date of Mar 1970 which according to this article means it must have been one of the early ones to the Southern region. The original owner did say he had to wait for delivery after ordering from pictures. Oh well, I guess this is just another piece of the puzzle.

    Happy Jeeping!

Forgot to comment on the bumper. Mine came with a chrome bumper but it's the standard straight style and not the curved style. Don't know why, but I do know a lot of opitions were added at the dealership, such as these which are original to mine:
    Diamond tuck interior
interior lights mounted on the dash and inside rear fenders
    AM/FM 8-track

I remember those yellow jeeps cruising around in the sand with a paddle board on top.

Now they use Nissan 4 door pick up trucks.

On my Renegade 1 built in Sept. the rear side light on the drivers side is indented and the passenger side is flush.

Dang, you guys got me again! Last time I went and checked on the rear marker lights, I checked the passenger side of the RI and the drivers side of the RII because of the way they are parked. Just went and looked closer and they both have the lights indented on the drivers side and flush on the passenger side. Wonder why they did that?

They would need a new die to stamp the the right fender with a dent. Likely didn't happen until they were committed to larger production volumes.

Glad these factory photo's helped someone's correct restoration.

    Tim,

May be the passenger side was not indented for a side mount spare? Why do one side and not the other?

Yes, not to mention that the literature here totally refutes claims made by book authors that R1s came in only 3 colors, blue not being one of them. Good thing we have a site like this that occasionally reveals new and fresh facts about Jeep history. And thanks to the original poster for sharing.

Yes. The side-mounted spare had its own reflector, and covered where the indented light would be on the right side. In '72, the Renegade came with a solid back panel, and those right fenders had an indent. The solid back panel was moved to the regular option list in 1973, and those Jeeps also had the indented panel.

Prior to '72 only the M38A1 and the Ren II had the solid back panel, but neither of those had the dent. So, I presume, the success of the Ren models, and the popularity of the solid panel with rear mounted spare, made making a new die to stamp the indented right panel worthwhile. But not before the 1972 model year.
