I was just wondering what most cj5 owners perfer when it come time to grease the double cardan joint. Napa sells two, one short spring loaded for hard to reach places for $8 and the other a longer fixed needle for $17. I tried a search first but came up without a match.

    I bought the short needle.

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

I have always used the long needle type(about 3" long), made by Lincoln I believe.
The needle is probably the diameter of an ice pick, maybe larger. It can take abuse and won't bend like some of the others out there.
You can thread a zerk fitting right on to the body of the adpater and go.
I like the longer reach of a longer needle, my 0.2 worth

The one I have is 7” overall with the spring and also has the 3” needle, but Napa was saying that was their shorter of the two they had :? Anyways, it works.

I am feeling really dumb here but what and where is the double cardan joint? I bet I haven't been greasing it.

Cardan-style universal joint driveshafts, subdivided into:

    Single-Cardan-style universal joint shaft; or
    Double-Cardan-style universal joint shaft

[IMG] Pictured at left - double-cardan-style universal joint shaft on top (my new High Angle Driveline shaft) and a single-cardan-style universal joint shaft (the junk I took out!)
Note that, as you would expect, the double-cardan shaft has one end (the transfer case end) that has a joint that contains, two cardan-style u-joints - forming the "double-cardan" portion. More on this later.

The double cardan Joint is like two universal joints housed in one unit or assembly. Double cardan is a term used when describing a one piece driveshaft with three (or more) universal joints. What a double cardan will do, is split a universal joint operating angle into two separate angles that are exactly one half of the original angle. CJs should be greased every 5000 miles or 3 months under harsh conditions (anyone driving off road) every 3000.

    Thanks for clearing that up.
