Buick 225 pushrod length

    :iagree: and they were solid, smaller but solid. ive even noticed on the f134 they changed the push rods over the years. some were solid and some were not. but every 225 that i have been into these guys are telling you spot on accurate information.

    Thanks. Made an order from Summit Racing tonight for the part number 7869-12. The length seems to be more in line with the existing ones, and I sent the others back.

    Last question. I ordered the part 7869-12 which are 8.686 long. But as another member pointed out, TAP sells pushrods for a 1964 225 which are 8.594 long. This is the only place I can find any reference to 1964 having different lengths.
    The numbers on my block indicate that my block is 1963-65 (1358435), but the heads are 1967-75 (B-1376348). Since there is such a small difference between the two numbers I'm having a hard time figuring out which of the two lengths the ones in the block are (my micrometer is not that big).
    The motor hasn't been run since the rebuild as far as I can tell.

    Should I stick with the longer of the two which I ordered?

    I have the set from summit on the shelf and adjustable ones in my motor (the rockers are adjustable too) and will compare them when I pull the valve train to send to Mike. I will probably do this tomorrow or Sunday (depending on how Christmasy I feel) :)

    Ok guys, received the pushrods from Summit today, and guess what. They are too long. Looks like the ones in my motor are 8.594, and the Summit ones are 8.686. Buick must have used the shorter rods for 1964 only, which is why TAP sells the shorter rod for the 64.
    So back to a new question, what is the correct length, since it looks like the block is 1964 which would use the 8.594 length, but the heads are 67-75, which use the longer rods? Is there a difference in the lifter height that I now need to address?

    Its probably in the deck height of the block! I think all Buick lifters are the same?

    The easiest thing to do would be to get a hold of a pushrod that is adjustable to measure the length. They make one specifically for checking length.

    So, if the pushrod difference is one tenth of one inch, do you think I can use the longer ones without issue?

    Pre-Load on lifters should more in the range of .030 ... .060.

    I also had an early 225 and it had shorter pushrods as well. The valves were also smaller. I think there were some transiting changes that occurred when they changed the 198 to the 225.

    Since the casting numbers on the heads indicate they are newer than the block (67-up- I have the numbers posted earlier in this thread, should the motor use the short pushrods or the longer ones???

    The heads are not going to have anything to do with it. You are going to have to use whats fits, period. If the one set is to long your simply not gonna use them no matter whats suppose to fit. If the short ones fit thats what your gonna have to use. Go buy a single adjustable pushrod, crank it out till it fits and then measure it. That will be the size you need.

    not that anything I have to say is going to help you, but Jeep V6s used only one set of cylinder heads, push rods, lifters and rocker arms; there is a difference noted in rocker shafts between CJ and Jeepster; what and why I don't know.
    The OEM 225 Buick/Jeep part numbers are:
    1185648 push rod
    1194142 left rocker arm
    1194143 right rocker arm
    5232245 lifter
    992866 cylinder head
    these are part numbers, not casting numbers.
    just listing them if it helps someone crossover to another brand, etc.

    When I had my heads done I had the machine shop put hardened seats in but they didn't check there work and I ended up with a variance in the height few valves stems, I ended up getting 6 adjustable pushrods from these guys. they were an on the shelf item, no problems yet.

    Well, for those of you who are interested, I checked the pushrod length by using the Felt tip pen technique. The results show that the pushrods from Summit which are 8.686" long are too long. The ones which were in it are the correct length. I guess that the 1964 block must have a different deck height, which is why TAP sells the 8.594 length for the 1964 motor.

    So, how many thousands of an inch of lifter pre-load did you end up with ?
