I know this sounds strange, but i just purchased a jeep from a friend and i dont know much about it.i know that it is a Cj5 size jeep with a Dauntless V6. I was told that it was a military version and possibly a 1968. there is no ser#'s or vin #'s found yet.

What are the differences between the CJ5 and the ?M38a1? jeeps that would be obvious. My only past jeep experence is with my YJ and my J20 pickup.

    Hi Ali -

Welcome to the site from W. MI.

Any chance of posting some pics of your new find? That'd be the easiest way to help out. Also try searching the forums as another member (MRuta) recently brought home an M38A1 and has been noting some of the differences between it and a civvie CJ5.

There will be a port with a indention on the passenger side fender. There will be a piece you can remove from the hood for a snorkle. M38a1 have reverse shackles on the front. Thats just name a few things. They also have batteries in a compartment in the cowl. I never heard of a m38a1 having a stock v6 but someone might of put it in.

I believe an m606 (export military, also used by navy/airforce) MIGHT have had one.

M606 was a militarized 3B. 3B's didn't have Dauntless Engines in them, well, there are rumors but no proof.

    Welcome Ali from Ohio!

There was much discussion on this topic lately, particularly regarding the large hole in the passenger side for the M38a1s. Here's some good reading (and pictures) that should help identify the M38A1:

Sounds like a non-shackle-reversed M38A1 with a V6 swap. Definitely an M38A1 body. Get the number off the frame...

Go buy a couple a books or so and read up on the history and background of jeeps.(1) The Jeep Bible by King/Worthy, (2) Jeep Owners Bible by Ludel. I'm sure the rest of the guys could recomend other books as well to gain some insight what you have. These are just 2 books I find myself goin' back to from time to time when questions come up. Oh, welcome to the board. :)

I plan on buying many new books for reference soon.this looks to be a lot harder than the buildup of my 95 YJ.But it already feels like it will be more rewarding when/if it is finished.

    Thanks, Ali.
