need help w/diff. rebuild question

    Here's the scenario......

    Early D44 rear axle housing, bare naked, powerwashed and degreased, blasted and powdercoated, then degreased and washed again. Totally clean and out of the vehicle, pick it up and carry it.

    Original ring, pinion, and case. All gears, spiders, shafts, etc., are in fine shape and usable.

    Box with all new bearings, races, shims, seals, etc.

    I need the differential assembled and properly shimmed. Needs to be "set up".

    How much should this little job cost? On average, just a ballpark idea.

    I have a guy that normally charges $250 if you have parts @ $300 if he has to get them.

    I don't setup diffs myself, or would give you a hand.

    3.5 hours and $350 dollars and a smashed finger. The old gent wasn't happy about the finger and I wasn't with the cost but I didn't have the band aid on the finger. So it worked out.

    OK, thanks all! I just had the D44 and D30 both done, and it was $163 apiece. I'll have to remember that little Jeep shop! I mentioned the name in a reply last night, but I see that reply is gone so I guess I can't name the shop?

    If I like the guy and you supply the parts (quality) I charge between $75 to $150 depending on the type of diff and how much clean up I have to do. (I'm not a shop so have low overhead, but don't work fast either). If I don't like you or get a bad vibe, I have to supply the parts, or you are supplying sub-standard parts, then the price is $200 plus for gear set up because typically cheap gears take longer to set up and don't last as long. Warranty depends on the quality of parts supplied/used. The better quality parts supplied, the better warranty. Tire size and engine size, gearing, etc. comes into play here as well. 350 hp, 100 plus -1 gearing, and 38" tires on a Dana 44 gets no breakage warranty but I will warranty whining, etc. You get the idea. Local Jeeper's I've charged as little as a fifth of Jack Daniels for a gear set up. All depends....

    So far I've never had a gear set up come back with dissatisfied customer. Had some unhappy with the time it took, but they were warned ahead of time....R)
