Piston Ring Install

So I'm in the process of installing new rings, but I've reached a stumbling block. The haynes manual says the second and top rings have a mark to indicate which side goes up. I see the markings, but the manual then says the second ring should be installed with the bevel down. If I do it this way, the marking would be opposite. So which way does the second compression ring go, bevel up or down? Thanks

What brand rings? I would follow the instructions of the ring manufacturer. Either that, or install the new rings in the same way as the old rings came out. The Haynes manuals screw things up pretty regularly, from what I understand.

Bevel up seems backwards to me, but I'm not an expert. Ask the ring manufacturer - check their web site.

IN 40 plus years of spinning wrenches and redoing jeeps, here's what I've learned.
    Follow the ring instructions.
I've NEVER installed a 2nd ring bevel down. Both rings should be bevel or marks up.
Check you ring end gap when you install them, (heck check then in the bore before you install them.
A old mechaionc told me years ago, "buy .10 bigger rings and file your ring to get the proper ring gap, takes up the cylinder wear or taper.
I've done that more than once, (it's a norm on off road bikes).
Make the rings last longer (of course the oil properties have changed a great deal since then, Metal and lubes are WAY better, but it kinda makes the J.O.B. perfect).

Just my 2 cents, use it as you may!:)

Standard practice is bevel up, so the ring ring expands against the cylinder wall under compression.
