What size pipe do the stock manifolds run? I am in the market for parts to put my exhaust back to a stock layout. Might have a line on a flowmaster muffler for cheap but need to know what size pipe the stock manifolds are designed to use so I get the right muffler.
    Thanks

Gunny, think small & adapt if necessary. Large dia exhaust pipes suck moisture in when shut down, and cooled. I ran a 2 1/2" exhaust on a 67 camaro and the mufflers rusted out quickly. Large dia exhaust is for hi horsepower/hi rpm engines. Go small and rig up adapters as needed. My 2c worth anyway.

I'm tracking with that. I used to have a chart somewhere that recommended pipe size based on CID and horsepower. Can't seem to find it now. What I really want to know is what size the outlets on the stock manifold were designed to use. Aren't they pretty much made for a specific size? I'm looking at some used manifolds, but they don't come with the flanges that secure the pipe to the manifold. Is this a part an exhaust shop would have or be able to make? And wouldn't that piece also be made for a specific size pipe? Stock 231 manifolds I have look like they have a 1 7/8 outlet, maybe to be used with a 2" pipe? If the Dauntless manifolds are that way I would probably use 2" pipe all the way out. Which in turn means I'm looking for a muffler with 2" inlets and outlets.

Thanks DG, exactly what I was wanting. Geez, the FSM is literally 8 inches from my fingertips as I sit here at the computer.

I went with 1.75 i.d and ran them into a 2.25 i.d. turbo muffler(med. sz.) with single 2.25 out the back on drivers side next to shakle. It's a custom system with mandrel bent cruves.Nice sound but still suttle. Don't make the mistake of duals out the side, you'll tire of the noise in a short time.

I have the fenderwell headers into glasspacks at the side. Some days I like it, but on the longer drives it gets annoying fast.
