Yet another choke stove question

    Hi I have posted questions on this before but am still having issues. Have a 74 CJ5 with stock 258, carter YF. Question is the hot air choke was not installed - I know from v8 experience that the choke tube setup in a 304 goes from the carb into the manifold (where the air is warmed) and out into the choke housing (basically a big loop). The 258 however just has a hole in the exhaust manifold that I stuck the tube into. Is this correct? With this setup I suck in exhaust soot into the choke housing - that can't be right...Am I missing something here?? I checked out the parts manual and it looks like the tube off the choke housing connects to something in between it and the manifold. Need some advice and if anyone has a picture that may help. Thanks all!

    My 232 (I assume the manifolds are the same) Also have a Carter single barrel with auto choke.On mine the steel tube is running directly to the exhaust manifold and connecting with a crimp joint.From the crimp joint on the manifold it is running into the manifold through a tube that is isolated from the exhaust gasses.
    If you get soot into your choke assembly, then I suppose the heater tube in the manifold is shot.It is only suppose to suck in hot air, not aexhaust gasses.
    My choke coil is shot, so I will convert mine to manual choke, because I can't find parts for my Carter.

    On the old-style 232/258 cast iron manifolds that I've seen, the heat stove is just a pocket in the manifold, with no connection to anything except the surrounding air. The tubing that goes to the choke housing slides into that pocket. There's no provision for filtering the incoming air, as on a V8. The V8 takes filtered air from the air horn and passes it through the stove, and then to the choke housing.

    In both cases, the hot air is drawn into the choke housing by engine vacuum, though an internal passage in the carburetor.

    Also, there is a HELP kit form Dorman meant to repair your choke stove. It's a bracket that clamps to the manifold, and a new tube that connects to the choke housing. The Dorman kit uses a small wad of glass wool to filter the incoming air.

    OK thanks for the responses. I am not sure if the hole in my manifold is isolated - I am guessing not. Is there a way to determine if the manifold is original to the Jeep? Tim does the kit you are referring to use the original hole? I ask cause I have seen other systems that (I think) clamp to the outside of the manifold.

    No, it does not use the original hole. It has a new stove that clamps to the exhaust manifold. The stove is just a bent piece of steel IIRC, that has a place for the hot air tube.

    The existing pocket has to be a blind hole. If it were connected to the exhaust passage, it would feed hot, corrosive exhaust gas into the choke housing. Would not last long, IMO.
