Toolbox and glovebox lock

I just got my new Juan body in Tuesday and I want to put some sort of lock on the toolbox, but don't want to go the padlock route. I just saw an old restored Bronco today that gave me the idea. Tuffy makes a pretty neat tumble lock. Why could't I do something like this. All I see doing is drilling a hole for it to fit, right?



I also want to put a lock on the glovebox as well. Frankly, I don't like the stock flush style pushbutton latch that was originally on mine. I have seen some "D" shaped hole style locks show up on ebay, but those get ridiculous $$. Has anyone crossed this bridge already?

 

I think this could work for the glovebox. Course this one is plastic, but I guess there are metal ones

 

McMaster-Carr 1770A412. Several dozen other configurations in their catalog. I just used a standard GM lock for the glove box-probably 70-80's that has the cylindrical lock collar screw mounted on the back side.

 

You could buy a glove box lock from Jeep, back in the day. Likely it's a standard GM part, with a distinctive bezel.

McMaster has some cylindrical (circular keyway) versions that would be a more difficult pick job, but I don't think any of them would prevent theft if someone really wants to get the glove box/tool box open-a tire iron would make short work of most.

 

Might also try your local locksmith for suggestions as to ones that are harder to pick.
Most locks are to keep the honest people honest and to minimize targets of opportunity anyway, but they are a deterrent.

 

For the glovebox lock, I think you don't want to go overboard - if somebody wants to get in, they can rip out the box or bend the door. Good for storing your gloves, sunglasses and registration, but not much else.

The cam lock would be good for the toolbox. You could secure the toolbox like a safe.

Interesting. I've been looking for some better locks that would fit my truck box. My truck got broke into about a year ago and I found out that my insurance doesn't cover "loose items". I also found out that they consider my tool box and contents "loose items". Luckily the thieves only took my GPS and didn't get into the tool box. The only locks I have been able to find are the standard "utility lock". ..and for those of you that don't know most of your truck toolboxes have one of four or five keys. I'd change them if I were you.

I found McMasters (http://www.mcmaster.com/#) but did not find the lock referenced. I looked under "cam lock" and again under "high security cam lock" and did not see it. You wouldn't happen to have a part number????

Went to a locksmith and you can get various flavors of those cam locks. I think I am going to do that on the tool box. I want to rig up some kind of finger handle like you have duffer. Did that come with the lock?

I'd like to go with something that acts like a latch for the glovebox so I can open and close it without getting the key everytime. I do want to lock it though. I don't want to make it a cannon safe, just to keep away opportunists like you said Duffer.

I wonder if anyone has put a MB glovebox latch/lock on a stock cj5 door?

I installed a lockset from a mailbox in my glovebox. From Ace Hardware.

My toolbox under the seat isn't lockable, but I don't keep anything in it anyway.

Registration and insurance are all that goes into the glovebox. And they are sealed in those resealable ziplok baggies.

I went to a Jeep dealer and got a glove box lock off of a later rig. So now the key says Jeep on it & I can tell what that key is for.

 

My Jeep keys are on a separate ring from my others, and so is my Goldwing key ring.
So instead of going through 28 keys on one keyring set, I have a set of 4 for my Jeep and one of 3 (with spares, until I get a second ignition key made (not easy)) for my bike. That way I know what is on each keyring set, without looking at one and saying
'Now, what does this go to?'
