Where is the typical mounting for these cable operated winch contactor/switch? how are the cables routed from the cab to the engine compartment? pictures are appreciated. thanks

  3. You could always eliminate the mechanical switch by using a couple of constant duty solenoids and run a small switch to the cab.

Mine's mounted on a flat bar just behind the shock mount on the drivers side framerail. The switch is mounted to the back side of the bar - you can see the holes for it in the picture. There was another thinner piece of sheet metal that bolted in these holes and the switch mounted to it. I'll have to see if I can find other pics.

As for the cable routing, the "control panel" is on the left of the steering column (when you're sitting in the drivers seat) and they just drilled some holes in the firewall for the cables. The way they were on mine didn't seem right, there were too many twists and turns, so I'm going with a more direct routing when I put them back. I know one of the cables was routed to the winch through a hole in the front of the grille, and one went through a hole drilled in the shroud behind the grille and then just poked out of the grille opening on the right side. You can see the holes in the picture below; the one directly on the backside of the grille still has a grommet in it, and the one in the shroud is the only hole the PO didn't fill with fiberglass. If memory serves me correctly, I think one of the cables crossed over the engine compartment and came out on the other side of the grille, but I don't remember how it was done. I think something came out between the grille and the framerail?

Here's a picture of the switch mount:

    thanks for the replies.

i'm gonna give this cable system a shot but if they don't work well i'll look into solenoids.

cool, thanks. my initial idea was to mount the switch somewhere on the passenger side of the engine compartment. i figured it was closer to my firewall-mounted battery and to the cable that came out of the winch motor. i haven't even consider putting it on the driver's side but after seeing the pics, it looks like it'll work better. it favors the controller cable: more of a straighter route from the cab. i'd much prefer to get a long battery cable than have too many turns on the controller.

regarding the placement of the control panel, is that just based on what hand you want to operate the cables with? we seem to have opposite ideas because i was thinking of putting the control panel on the right side of the steering wheel based on how it'll look on the dash...more of a centered look on the dash.
