Another speedo gear question

Ok, I know this has been covered before, but I still have a couple questions. I just drove a guys '69 model 5 with the 6 and I kind of noticed the speedo seemed off, like it was reading way too slow for how fast I was driving. It has 31" tires, like mine has now. I noticed someone mentioned a chart that gives gear ratios with gear tooth count but the link is bad, I guess from when the site was down. Anyway, can someone give me a simple solution to this.

I have 3.73 gears and will be running 31" tires. I also have a brand new NOS speedo with the orange dial and a D18 TC. Is there an aftermarket gear to set the stock speedo to the correct speed? If not, I have heard of an aftermarket speedo cable that you can adjust. Is there such a thing that will fit my jeep?

 

There is not a "speedo cable adjustment" to fix your speedo but there are what are called "ratio adapters" that go in line with the speedo cable. They come straight, angled, 90*'s, etc.
I can't help you on the math to figure what you need as that's not my strong suit. Hopefully Jim, Dante, Lynn, or one of the other smarter people will chime in on that.

When I said speedometer adjustment, I didn't mean anything stock. I was referring to something aftermarket. If I can find a bolt on adjuster, that interests me more than getting gritty with finding another gear. Are they manually adjustable or do you have to get one specific? Someone on that other post mentioned a "speedometer store." What's that?

 

I agree! The id Jim has provided us with has proved invaluable to me in identifying boxes full of mismatched gears that will actually work together.

Most/many of these gears are not produced any more and what's used is what's available, so everyone, save them! Nickmil

Thank's JP. I'm looking for all possibilites, but from what was said, finding another gear would be harder than getting one of those ratio modifiers, right? Where can I get one of those?

 

Any shop that rebuilds speedometers or can calibrate them should be able to get them. Some driveline shops can too. I just don't know what you have available in your area.

Meltdown, have you used a handheld GPS to note the true speed.if you have one or borrow one take it in the jeep (prefferably with a passenger holding GPS)Note speed on speedo and gps reading.do this at say 30,50 mph, etc. this should give the shop some intication of the% of correction you need.recheck with GPS after your done.As Nic said thats about as easy as it gets. happy jeeping.
