Yeah, it's that time. Clutch replacement. And was wandering if you guys knew of a easy way to get the pilot bushing out without using another clutch shaft and having the old pilot bushing packed with grease and pushing it out. Thats the easy way, I just don't have a spare clutch shaft. Any ideas? Thanks for any help. Duke

wooden dowel works well too. pack cavity with grease or soggy toilet paper, then smack the dowel with a hammer.

I've used a 3/8 drive ratchet extension, also. pack it and smack it!

I packed it and smacked it with a big 'ol bolt that was just about the same diameter as the hole.

This pack with grease idea is great.... I'll have to use it next time... I taped the hole out to a larger thread size and the thread a bolt in to. I then used two pry bars to pull it out...

    I like the grease idea..
    Thanks,

I like the soggy toilet paper idea. I hate having to clean the grease up afterwards. Should I put on gloves before I fish the paper out of the toilet? Hehe

Well it's out. Turns out that a bolt close to the size of the pilot bushing hole with a little electrical tape wraped tight around pushed it out in 3 trys. Thanks for the ideas guys, you saved the day. Duke

The last time I did this (on an F-134) I just had the machine shop install it.

They had to do the resurfacing of the flywheel anyway, so I had them do it.

Interesting thing though, after installation it would not fit on the transmission shaft. I went back and had the shop bore out the pilot bearing a little and it worked fine.

I don't know about the v-6, but on the f-134 the technique is to throw the pilot bearing in a container full of 30 weight oil and let it sit overnight.

The pilot bearing is porous so an overnight in 30 weight lets it soak up lubricant.

Not trusting this completely, I added a little white lithium grease to the package.

Pilot bearings are sintered bronze typically. Powdered bronze molded with heat and pressure so that the edges of the particles fuse and the material is porous. I've always soaked them in oil. If the bearing does not feel oily, definitely oil it. Sometimes there's a felt wick behind them that should be saturated with oil too.
