Stop Light switch on 72 cj-5

So.....Bought this jeep, has turned out to be a very interesting electrical project. Many previous owners has led to many cut/hacked/jacked up/mismatched colored wires. Now that I'm done with my rant, I wanted to ask about the stock brake light switch. I ordered a replacement brake light switch and it turns out to be nothing like the one that is in the jeep.

THe one in the jeep appears to be a newer electrical style switch. It's mounted on the brake pedal assembly with two wires run to it and a newer style push in switch. The one that I ordered (for a 72) came in and is presenting it self to be a fluid pressure switch.

So my question is, what kind of switch was on a stock 72 jeep, and where was it located. If it was located on the brake pedal assembly what actually depressed the switch when you let off of the brake pedal? Any pics or help would be greatly appreciated.

 

On a '72 the brake switch is located on the underside of the master cylinder and is a fluid pressure switch.

Let me add:
Either will work,I would swing for the mechanical underdash switch for its simplicity,and fewer parts in the brake system.

My '73 had the under-dash switch, but I'm not sure about the '72. Could have been either.

The '73-style under dash switch was replaced by a simpler pushbutton in 1976 (?), activated by a paddle on the brake pedal.

 

Perhaps the different brake switches also were used depending on which pedals you have, ie, cable clutch was pressure switch on the master cylinder and the under dash switch was used with the clutch linkage. My '72 has the original cable clutch.

 

My 72 had a pressure switch on the M/C before I got rid of the cable clutch and converted to disc brakes.

 

Mine had the switch under the dash on the brake pedal assembly. However it was stripped out and not functioning. I removed it and mounted the switch on the master cylinder. I'm curious though if there is a particular type of connector that goes on those round terminals. Anyone have any idea? here's a pic of the termianls that I'm looking for a specific connector for.

 

It is a flat connector with 2 slots for the studs - slides on sideways over both terminals at once.

 

Any idea where I might could find one?

 

It would be the same style connector that attaches to the back-up light switch on your transmission. Not a big deal if you can't get hold of one - you can just use the brass contacts (available at any FLAPS) without the plastic connector that they would be clipped into. Just be sure to secure them so they can't touch each other and give you a false brake signal.

Just FYI, my '75 CJ5 has the brake light switch that goes between the master cylinder pushrod and the brake pedal, under the dash. There is also a pressure switch on the brake proportioning valve that's mounted to the frame, although this one is only to signal a loss of hydraulic pressure and thus potential break failure. I don't think this existed yet on a '72.

 

Would you by chance have a pic of what you are speaking of? Also what is a FLAPS? I don't have any idea what these connectors look like as my vehicle did not have one when I purchased it.

thanks guys. I appreciate the reading kunaji. that's the route I'm gonna take. I'll just go to napa and get a sl144 switch with screw in terminals.

 

I honestly hate the MC brake light setup. I have no idea how many of those little pressure switches I have replaced over the years... I want to convert mine to the pedal type switch some day.

 

WHat kind of switch set up did you have in mind? Do you have a weblink to a particular style of pedal setup? I'm interested in redoing my pedal set up, but haven't done any research on available types of pedal mount switches.
