Here in PA, antique is any car 25 years or older, Soo.. my 89 bronco isn't quite old enough to be "antique", so I could call it "vintage". Thanks for the clarification.

If I was breaking in a freshly rebuilt engine I would take every precaution and use every safety net available but I’ve had bad experiences with flattened cam lobes.

I broke in my last Dauntless with Joe Gibbs racing oil, then changed the oil and ran another 500 miles with more of the same.

Mobil 1 in a synthetic, isn't it? Did you notice a difference in oil consumption?
I read that once the synthetic oil gets all of the gum and crude out of your engine the rings will seal better and oil burning and consumption go down.

I use ZDDPlus in my '85 GMC 454 and my sister's '84 2.5L-powered XJ, and they both run fine - the 1-ton has had some form of ZDDP (tried some Valvoline racing oil, too) in it for the last 20,000 miles and has
98,500 on it, and the Jeep has had a ZDDP additive (Lucas break-in additive at first, then ZDDPlus or Eastwood's equivalent additive) in it since the engine rebuild 20,000 miles ago.

On the other side of the coin, my dad's '86 Chevy K20 (carbureted 350) with 360,000 miles on the untouched short block (he bought it new) and '97 Suburban with 340,000-mile Vortec 350 (got it at 160,000, no internal engine work since then) have never had any ZDDP additives and neither one of them have had any cam issues that I know of. So I'd say it's debateable, but I use it on the chance that there is something to it and I'd run the risk of damaging one of my cams without it.
