Man that thing is pretty clean. What's up with the steering? It looks like a combination Ross/Saginaw/Hi steer setup.

SouthWest 67-5 What's on your mind?

That's nice. I see it has the standard Jeep parking brake behind the left rear tire. :D Good score.

yep, trying to figure that out now. first i will strip it out and the repair the frame. i'll post some pics later of the way the po compromised the frame. but after looking at it and with some suggestions from this group i think it can be made as strong or stronger than it originally was.

the column is from a gm caprice. my nephew who works at a good salvage yard recognized it immediately from the picture.

o' well i was hoping that there would be some work to do on it other than electrical anyway. if i can get this fixed so it's safe i'll be that much prouder of it when i finish.

the box turns out to be a weird kind of saginaw. even has the s trademark on it. i was told that there is a snap ring version (this one) and the normal one. i was told to avoid the snap ring version which naturally, the po used in this cj.

i have to admire the amount of "custom" welding the guy did to get this thing to work with existing bellcrank. from what i have learned from you all and the site i have visited like cj3 as well as this site and from looking at amc era diags of the steering linkage.. it would have been sooooo much easier to just replace the two part rods with one tie rod take out the bell crank, put a pitman on the bottom of the saginaw and connect that to a connecting rod which was connected to the passanger side end of the tie rod. correct?

anyway if you're interested, i have put some close and personal pics of the frame damage for suggestions as to frame repair on the thread "i'm calmer now .. ". i am going to have a professional exnavy welder in town look at it and see how much he would charge to "repair" the damage. since i haven't welded in over 25 years and i wasn't that good at it then either.

i did get rid of about 50-75% of the wander and loose steering by tightening the end cap on what use to be the drag link.

even though i kinda freaked out with the steering problem, i forgot how much i really love working on jeeps and cars. even more than video games!!

I remember when I got my jeep about a year ago this time. Since I live in the North East I bascially had to find a place to keep it for the winter. Although I was so exicted that I spent a few night tinkering with it frezzing my fingers off.

Congrats man, and good luck with it.
