CJ5 "473" or "475"

evanjm Yeah, it's got an F-head.

can someone tell me the difference between a 473 CJ5 and a 475 CJ5? They're both powered by an f-head/t90 combo?

    I know a 463 is the L-head 134, and a 473 is the standard F4-134. So what's a 475 F-head?

    thanks,
    evan

I've only seen the designations you described used for early Willys wagon model designations, not for CJ's. I have a catalog showing the different designations but it's not clear on the difference in the 73 or 75 numbers, just that they're model numbers and they changed them around quite a bit.

I thought those were hp numbers?

I always thought that too, but I've seen info saying the L-head is 60 hp, and the F-head numbers were 72 and 75, depending on the compression. What I have is from Willys America, and it of course has misprints in it on some engine info so who knows what to believe.

So it's not HP numbers? :? I know I've read that the truck model #s were the number of cylinders/hp at some point in time and then they changed all that.

The 463 was the Go Devil version, they became the 473 with the Hurricane.

You on the WillysTech list? I bet they know.

Side note, I'm not aware that this ever applied to the Universal line.

The 475 designation makes perfect sense, and reading more they do say the L-head had 63 hp so that also makes sense. What doesn't add up is they called the F-head models 473, then 475 even though supposedly (according to what I'm reading) they were 72 hp. Like you said, I'm sure someone on W/T knows. :coffee::beer:
