Hi guys, gotta great forum here. I've recently aquired a 1971 cj5 and from what I understand there should be a transfer case brake. Mine does not have one. How would I go about installing a parking brake? I guess my question is what options do I have?

    drexotic Happy now?!?!?

I'm not sure that the 71 came with a parking brake on the output from the TC but if it did I would guess that a PO has swapped out your transfer case and with it your brake.

First thing is to find out what transfer case you have, what rear axle and brakes you have and how long your rear drive shaft is. From there you can see if it is possible to replace the original, add an e-brake to your rear brakes, etc.

Welcome to the board! Pictures of your rig and it's drive train.

I just took mine off, never worked worth a rip anyway. I use a line lock.

Mine was getting oiled from the leaky rear T/C seal which I fixed. But that was when I took it off so I don't know if it would have worked if un oiled :=). My Jeep doesn't get driven on the street much and doesn't need to pass any safety inspection. For the trail I find a line lock works much better and I have one on the front brakes and the rear for uphill or down,

You can install 11" drums from a later CJ that have provisions for a parking brake as well and go that route.

But be sure to upgrade the front brakes as well.

I think the consensus is that the parking brake works ok if you can keep the transfer case oil off of the linings. That's a big IF though.

Another possibility is converting to 11" Bendix brakes, which have a very effective mechanical parking brake that activates the rear shoes.

I wonder if a '71 may not have had the TC brake? I'd guess the Jeepsters of the era, with the D20 and 10" brakes, would have had a mechanical parking brake similar to that used on the 11" Bendix brakes. 1970-71 were transitional years, and could have gotten the more modern style parking brakes...

<edit> Ha! Great minds think alike ;)

My '71 has a TC parking brake, built in Feb. '71. Doubt that's a feature someone would "add". LOL!

Seems to me that for a while you could get a disk system that mounted to the rear of the TC in place of the drum.

How ever that might be for the 3/4 ton GMC pickup, and I am just blowing hot air.R)

Search for "mico-lock" here and on Google. :)

Though it's not an E-brake, if your hydraulics blow you're outta luck.

I doubt a mico-lock would pass safety inspection, if that matters in NJ.

My parking brake works very well. I used the set up from Herm to replace my old one.

I used parts from All Pro Off Road to make a disc parking brake in place of the drum....works very well.

Wow, thanks guys. I can't believe how many responses I've received. Definately gives me some information to work with. Do I go with a trasfer case setup or upgrade to the 11" setup which my allow for true parking brake at the wheels? I guess more research is in order.....

Nuttin wrong with the TC setup when it's properly cared for. Most Jeeps have had the Dana 18 leaking out the back seal for years so the shoes are toast. If you put a good seal in there, replace the shoes and seal the splines on the rear yoke with RTV sealant you should get many years out of the stock setup. The rear seal is one of the few places my Dana 18 doesn't leak.

I rebuilt my TC parking brake. needed a couple of missing parts.works great even with a little oil on it. holds well. Realize that since it's on the TC it will hold all four wheels if you're in 4wd. thus you've also got the differential ratio helping as well as engine, trans and xfer case. Harder to turn all that from the wheel end than from the engine end.
