    Any flooding is "too much".

I think you diagnosed your problem yourself. You said the float sticks. CAREFULLY clean the needle and seat and report back.

if a metal float, shake it to see if it has leaked gas inside. if so, replace float

I agree with both of the above,While you have it apart take note of what type of Needle And Seat assembly you have ( the little valve the float works to let fuel into the float bowl ).
The correct needle and seat assembly for the early YFs with stock fuel pump should be a solid brass needle and a little spring and pin that rests on the float arm, the hole in the valve body that the needle fits into should be .076 in diameter.
Some carb kits have both the smaller brass needle and seat assembly and the larger later model needle and seat assembly that has the viton tipped needle ( black rubber looking tip on needle ).
Use of the larger black rubber tipped needle and seat assembly can cause flooding in early models even with the stock fuel pump.
If you hold the two little valve bodies up and look through them both at the same time the size difference is obvious.
If it still floods after you take the steps sparky and $sink suggested with a correctly adjusted float ..........make sure you have the smaller spring loaded solid brass needle and seat assembly installed.
If flooding persists after that and the fuel pump is not a stock replacement you may need a pressure regulator.
Keep us posted on your progress (-:

If it's backfiring, check your timing.
