Gasket or Silicone sealer

Ive got a new gasket set so now its time to install the offy manifold but after watching some shows on tv do I use the the rubber gaskets and a little silicone at both ends or do I just use a silicone bead alone? This a used part and my 1st installing an after market manifold. I dont want warp the manifold with the gaskets. Cant wait to get it installed I sent it out to the polisher and boy is it shiny

I always use a gasket with a little permatex sealer but not with metal gaskets, I'm not a big fan of so called blue glue. I have seen more crap screwed up by this than you can shake a stick at, everything from locking hubs to oil pumps. It works good but most people that I've seen use it get carried away.

Its the rubber gaskets to the oil gallery on the front and rear of the engine. I saw something on hot rod tv and they said just use a fat bead of silicone to seal it. Just doesnt make sense unless it might warp it.

 

I agree w/ Mike. The stuff should be used sparingly. In the oil gallery I use just enough to keep the gasket in place while I'm installing. Absolutely never any between heads and intake.:v6::v6:

 

You only use silicone to replace the end gaskets. The end gaskets can bottom out if the block, heads or intake have been resurfaced. This will cause the rubber to be cut and leak and possibly cause the side gaskets to leak. If you use silicone for the end gaskets, when the intake is torqued down, the silicone will crush and make a perfect seal. Usually 1/4 inch of silicone is plenty of thickness. Let it mush out and harden. When it has hardened, you can trim the excess for looks if you like with a razor blade.

 

Well thats what I did and heres how the motor looks now. Only problem is now I tried installing the distributor and it wont go in all the way pulled old one apart and just used gear and shaft without housing and its being pushed away from cam gear as if its to big the gear that is, or not aligned properly. Think Im gonna change the name from Dana to Smalls as in the movie the Sandlot.

Ebay special got them last year sometime just quietly accumulating parts with no receipts so the wife cant pin anything on me of how much is in the jeep
