Transfer case stuck to tranny

    I'm trying to remove my T-18 from my T-14 in my 67. I've got all the linkages, brackets, driveshafts, etc removed, and the transfer case unbolted. The transfer case will slide just a little bit back, but I can't separate it from the transmission.

    Am I missing something? It seems like it is pivoting around the transmission output shaft when I wiggle the transfer case...

    Did you remove the gear on the back of the transmission?

    Yep, it's the gear retaining nut holding it all together. Get a cold beverage and have at it!

    That bull gear should slide through the large hole d18 attached to a t14shouldn't it?

    No. the bearing retainer will stop that. you need to remove the rear cover (roundwith 5 bolts), then remove the gear with either 1 1/4 or 1 5/16" socket (might have to remove the top cover on the tranny and put it in 2 gears to prevent it from spinning). Then the tranny will seperate from the transfer.

    My big hole dana 18 came off of my T86 without removing the bull gear. Bearing retainer is on the transmission side I believe.

    Originally I had the T-14 with the D-18 behind it. I did not need to remove the bull gear to separate gear boxes. The Dana 18 hole should fit on to the bearing retainer on the back of the trans only to center it. Others could be different so anything goes...

    Mine came off T86 with D 20 case.
    Without taking the output gear off
    But it need'd some encouragement from a BFH.
    Gently of course.

    Mine came off w/o removing anything internal (D18/T14). I believe I used a prybar between the cases to unseat them.:v6:

    also remember that front Bolt. If you do not remove that and try to force them apart you will crack the case :(

    You do not need to remove the bull gear from the transmission if you have a large hole case. What Dan said is right.

    the retainer is probably rusted to the case. Dead blow and gentle use of a pry bar.

    :oops: That front bolt did the trick. It wasn't tight to begin with for some reason. The transfer case would slide around but not come off. I pulled the gear, which helped once I had the transfer case loose, but I still had a bolt in.

    Thanks all for the ideas. I wasn't expecting that one bolt in from the front side.
