Need help finding a good carb

I recently went to NAPA to get a rebuilt carb (Rochester 2G for the 225 V-6). After hours of messing with it I finally took it to the mechanic, who told me it was a bad carb (bad accelerator pump). NAPA replaced it with another rebuild, same story. Spent hours messing with it, thought I must be an idiot (which may or may not be true), took it to mechanic, he said it was another bad carb. In addition to the price of the carb, I've now spent about $200 at the mechanic only to find out that the NAPA carbs are crap. Should I keep trying until I get a good one from NAPA, or is there an upgrade carb (ie. Holley) that can be easily adapted to the 225?

I rebuild all kinds of carbs and am very anal. I run them on an engine before I send them out, so if anyone runs into this kind of crap again I may be able to help.

As i mentioned some weeks ago there are very few carb. rebuilders still in business. some replied that the 2G Rochester was plentiful.Personely I don't believe that is the case.I think that the majority of rebuilts come from ONE shop.They might have a brand name on them from a national chain store but they originate in the same place.Tomco is about the only one i have found on the web. I bought one from them and it works great. just a note:the accelerator pump seems to be the problem circuit on these carbs.I believe this stems from the design and years of corrosion around the check ball area.there is no practical way to repair this by using a overhaul kit.

Where there is a will there is a way lol....I have brought back many a dead WCFB and Hemi carbs.

I took the one off my donor buick and it will be used again, it was pretty bad ,so bad I took pics.

The best part is it's a match to the HEI I took off the same rig.

 

Back in my parts counter days, Tomco was a good quality carb. Nearest thing to a "name brand" rebuilt carb that I know of.

Normally carbs are rebuilt in a factory setting. When the cores come in, workers break them down into components - bodies, air horns, brackets, linkages etc. - then the components are put together from the spec. If a rebuilder assembles one carb wrong, it's likely they are assembling all of them wrong.

<edit> Sparky's reply reminded me - KEEP YOUR CORE A LONG, LONG TIME. Never turn in your core until you are absolutely, positively finished. JMO - never turn in a carburetor core. The core charge is nominal, and to anyone mechanically inclined, having the carb is much more valuable than the core charge.

 

Check out this modified 2GC. It now uses Holley jets for easy tuning! $250 outright. 2GC are still used on boat motors.

in july of 1999 i sent my carb to a company called daytona parts co. at that time it cost 155.00 to have my carb restored. they replated it, rebushed the throttle plate did a rebuild on everything else and returned it to me.i bolted it on and have not had to touch it since. their number at that time was 904-427-7108. they were located in new smyrna beach florida. i belive i found them thru a ad in hemmings motor news. i'll see if i can find out if there still in business. if i remember correctly the turn around was about 10 days.
