    LUCK!
a thin rubber band to hold all the rollers on the surface prior to install , it will just eat the rubber band so NBD.works better than grease.

got started on the T18 rebuild today......used a 1" dowel (wrapped some duct tape on the ends to build it up a bit) and loaded all the needle bearings into the intermediate shaft using Vasoline to help hold them
    [IMG]
after several attempts I was able to get the thrust bearings to stay in place and
loaded the assembly into place, then drove the shaft in and the wood dowel out
    [IMG]
I started on the main shaft but have a problem.........when I installed the 3rd gear and new syncro then the clutch hub there isn't enough room to put the snap ring on......if I go back to the old syncro there's enough room. Should I remove material from the new syncro to allow room for the snap ring?????
    thanks, Jim

    sammy Coca-Cola?

Jim, I know it's too late but when I did my SM420, I used Red n Taky grease from Lucas. Lots of RnT....Lots of it... Lots of small needle bearings....Small needle bearings.... The death of me....

Vasoline worked well Sammy, there was 88 of those roller bearings in the intermediate shaft
I pm'd to Nickmil this morning and have found my problem with the 3/4 syncro assembly.....first pic is old blocking ring snug on the 3rd gear, next pic is new blocking ring "not" so snug on the 3rd gear.....makes enough differance to not allow room for the snap ring

need to call the vendor and see what the best solution is

Boy, you sure are having your fair share of problems with this repair, Jim. It's got to turn around for you soon. Here's a couple of    for ya!

It would be interesting to know the outcome of this problem.
I had the same problem on my T14 when I installed new blocking rings, but I managed to get the snapring back on with some effort.
I surely hope I don't have to open it up again!

Check it for being out of round. Is there another new blocking ring the same size that you can tryon this gear?

yea I tryed them both with the same results. Nick indicated that the inside "cone" on one of the rings is suppose to be smaller (less material)......I think they're both the same.
I sent these pics to R+P4wd where I got the parts...waiting to hear back
wonder if I could simply sand down the inside of blocking ring until it fits???

Those rings don't really wear out, usually. Inspect the ID for wear. The ones I took out of my T18 looked fine after 80+K miles in an F250 plow truck. Just sayin'................I wouldn't fault you for re-using it if it means getting back on the road. Use your best judgement.

well it ended up I had the 3/4 syncro hub on backwards :oops: (props to Nick and the folks at R+P4WD for helping me out)........once this was corrected the main shaft went together pretty easily. I used large zip ties to hold the large shift dogs/springs/ball bearings in place as I slid the shift ring into place, pretty straight forward
    [IMG]
I put the 22 remaining needle bearings into the input shaft
    [IMG]
then placed the input and main shaft into the case and carefully slid them together.......then tapped the front and rear bearings into place
    [IMG]
I have about 1/4" of play between the input and mainshafts and need to figure out how to get that together and to which end the play should go.....after that the remaining should be pretty easy

    nickmil In mothballs.

Cool! Glad it's going together for you.
Worry about the endplay after you get the front and rear bearings installed and the front bearing retainer installed WITH the gasket. Put it together dry first, the front and rear bearings installed, make sure you have the slinger between the front bearing and input gear (if yours had one, some don't).
If you have any more issues don't hesitate to pm or e-mail me.
Also, after you put the rear bearing on, install the spacer and bull gear and tighten down the nut. This will pull the output shaft back and install the rear bearing that last little bit so you can really check endplay. Make sure the adapter is on as that holds the rear bearing in place against the transmission case. Pay attention to the snap rings on the outside of the bearings. The ones that come with the bearings sometimes are thicker and won't work with the adapter or front bearing retainer. :tea:
