Are these threaded holes vestigal?

If you look at the passengers side and measure 9 inches aft from the upper shock mount you will see two threaded holes in the side of the frame. The thread size is 3/8 x 24 which is interesting since that is the same size as the lower fender mount holes in the flatfender jeeps.

I looked at every jeep and jeep frame (54 - 71 model years) I have and they all have the holes, and none of them are using them for anything, EXCEPT for the 3B which uses those exact two holes for lower fender supports.

It seems odd that jeep would continue to put these holes in frames that that are not flatfenders and different from flatfenders.

I checked the drivers side of the jeep, and the holes were there too, only they did not have the threaded inserts.

Has anyone ever seen a jeep that uses these threaded holes, or are they some sort of 'leftover' from the specs for the flatfender frames?

IIRC, on the very early M38A1, those holes were used for attaching the fender to the frame. I'll have to take a look at my A1 on Monday to see if this is the case.

Just checked... those holes are for mounting the fender on my A1. Sorry for the delay.

I also spotted the steering box I was supposed to check for Neptco19 and the column I need to send to Jerry.
